Forest Fire Near High Falls Lake Closes Algonquin Park Backcountry Campsites
Algonquin Park has closed backcountry campsites as a result of a forest fire (APK020) in the vicinity of High Fall Lake (near the Sand Lake Gate). Backcountry campsites on the following lakes are closed until further notice.
Brigham Lake
The Cascades
Cork Lake
High Falls Lake
Length Lake
Ooze Lake
Opalescent Lake
Marie Lake
Access to the High Falls area through the Eastern Pines Backpacking Trail
the so called "cheater trail" to High Falls
See the Official Canoe Routes Map of Algonquin Park for locations.
As of 4:30pm on August 20, 2016, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) is reporting that ...
"Algonquin Park 20, located near High Falls Lake is not under control at 30 hectares.
The 6 crews committed to this fire are working to contain it. With the rain we saw overnight [August 12, 2016] and into the morning, water bombers were not needed on this fire as of mid-afternoon today, conditions were manageable for ground crews
and they continue to make good progress on the perimeter of the fire."
For more information see the AFFES Current Fire Status.

Obviously an error in that article...we're not at August 20th quite yet.

Such a shame
I have very fond memories of a trip through Opalescent. I can only imagine the damage and loss to wild life.
Such a shame.

Forest fires are numbered in the province. Algonquin park 20 means it is the 20th fire in the province this year. Not that it is on the 20th of the month.

The ontario.ca site now reports the fire is 48 hectares in size and still not under control. A lot of rain fell on Friday night and Saturday and that is helping the fire fighters.

The ontario.ca site now reports that the fire is being held at 48 hectares. The rain on the weekend was a big help to the firefighters and more rain is expected tomorrow.

All the lakes closed due to the fire and the "Cheater Trail" to the High Falls area have reopened as of today.
