Re: Ice-out 2026

If you look at the current webcam photos from today on the website vs the same date on the time lapse there is much more open water already this year compared to last year.

Re: Ice-out 2026

We're still in "waiting for the all clear" mode for backcountry camping in Algonquin to open, right?  I've got a 5/2 reservation for the Rock/Pen area, getting stuff ready to go....but I'm kind of doing it based on hope right now.

Re: Ice-out 2026

The winds were really strong today, I'm on Kamaniskeg and it's completely free of ice.

Tomorrow is 18 and sunny. I suspect LOTR will be completely free of ice tomorrow, and they call ice out by mid-week. The satellite will be very informative tomorrow.

PS. Went shore fishing, it was too windy for the canoe. But it was lovely. Didn't catch anything

Re: Ice-out 2026

I think you'll be okay Dave.  AO staff from the Opeongo store posted yesterday that the ice is melting quickly and they expect ice out to be declared in a few days.

Re: Ice-out 2026

My last trip was september 2024.  After that, work, family schedules, and famously a snapped fibula took away other trips (I generally go ice out and fall).  We had just moved into our new house and I took that 09/24 trip.

I just now discovered....to my unending shame....that i never emptied and cleaned my food barrel.  So all remaining food is right where I left it.  Groooossssss.    Also never cleaned up my gravity filter, chucked that because I am not sure there's coming back from the microbial civilisation that was growing in that thing.   Sigh.  My only excuse is we had moved two weeks prior to that trip, must have been preoccupied with that.  Still......ugh.

Re: Ice-out 2026

Is Rain Lake Road expected to be open once Ice Out is declared? Currently it shows on the website as being closed.

Re: Ice-out 2026

New satelite image out this evening, looks like the ice is off all the big lakes.

Re: Ice-out 2026

Yep I expect it to be open next weekend and have a reservation. It is going to be freezing cold if the weather forecast holds up.

Re: Ice-out 2026

It will be open, LOTR was ice free on the 25th.  I'm still calling April 30th as official, honouring May 1 permits for this weekend.

If anyone is planning on heading in through Mag access, you might want to change plans as it sounds like the road has had a severe washout.

Re: Ice-out 2026

Looks like the Weather is improving, still cool on the weekend but some sun and moderate temps during the week. I was getting worried, I'm booked Sat-Sat and it was looking grim, hopefully it improves some more. I'd love to see 15-20deg daytime with 5deg overnight. Last few years seem to be really mixed.

Re: Ice-out 2026

It looks like there are advisories for a number of access points in addition to Mag.  Still no all clear...I'm packing and provisioning, hoping each day to see word that we're good to go.

Re: Ice-out 2026

It's not obvious, but it looks like they called ice-out for April 28.
Have fun everyone!

Re: Ice-out 2026

Reddit says park opens Friday as planned.

Re: Ice-out 2026

The Park posted opening May 1st on FB.  A number of access points remain closed due to poor road conditions and washouts.
This year I booked my Ice Out solo trip out of Canoe Lake,  I guess I got lucky with my planning this year.  Safe tripping to all!
