Started on Saturday Sept 27 6:50am from access point 11, Opeongo South Arm paddled across the South/North Arm by about 10:30 and did the 1000m portage into Proulx and then down the Crow River to Big Crow. Beautiful day with a light wind at my back all day. Was stopped by 2pm and relaxed had a bite to eat and went to sleep without a fire. The color's were a bit muted but still nice going across Opeongo, lots of boats in the early morning though, last weekend for fishing. I dragged a lure but only caught a couple of smallmouth.
Sept 28, Big Crow to Lavieille,
Started out around 7-8 can't really remember, the river was super low, I haven't done this route since 2017 around the same time of year and it was completely different. At one point I had to go over a Beaver Dam across the Crow River, some stretches were like a creek bed with my boat scraping the bottom. All of the portages were in decent shape except the last one, it had a bunch of trees down. The put in was dry and you had to drag your canoe across some mucky grassy field to get into the river at Crow Bay. I paddled out to Lavieille and headed to the east side of the lake about halfway down, trolled and caught nada. There was someone on the Island site (the only person I saw on Lavieille) so I took the site on the mainland just past the island sites. It was about 6pm by the time I stopped so just ate, set up and went to bed.
Sept 29, Lavieille,
Started trolling around 7:30am, I was using 2x 1/4oz weights about 6ft ahead of a small Williams spoon. I trolled around the Islands with the campsites and then headed toward the big island on the North-East side of the lake. I had one small speck on but lost him at the boat. Lost 2 more bigger fish just as I was going around the point on the big island with the two sites. Lost another small trout in the bay near the east outflow of the Crow. 0 for 4, freeze dried dinner! Just went back to camp and relaxed, went out for a fish in the afternoon but it was howling, only fished a couple of hours, no fish.
Sept 30, Laviellle-Dickson,
Left around 8:30 am, trolled across the lake to the north end of Moose Bay, trolled about a 3rd of the way down the bay on the north side and caught a nice speck 14-16inches approx, caught one more smaller fish on the south side of the bay heading back, one more smaller yet down towards the narrows at the south end. Paddled down to the site in the Bay on Dickson close to the 5500m portage. Camped for the night, had two fish for dinner.
Oct 1, Dickson to access point 11 Opeongo South Arm,
Started out early, probably around 8am, I have to double carry this 5500m portage so I have my work cut out for me today. did about 20-30 minute marches and then doubled back to bring up the rear. I was super tired and almost dead by the time I was done, I won't double carry that again, I've done it a couple of times before but that's it. the two small lakes and two 300m portages almost finished me off. I was supposed to camp on Opeongo tonight but I figured I'd start to paddle and see where I ended up. the wind was at my back from the time I left the East Arm until I hit the dock at Access Point 11. Unusually lucky on Opeongo this year, it can get pretty chaotic.
Great trip overall, 20 degrees high pretty much every day and 10 degrees approx every night. I forgot my yoke so that was interesting, my canoe has an adjustable tractor seat (Clipper Solitude) so I just put it in the highest setting and used the edge of the seat as a yoke, not great. My Thermorest finally went flat after about 10-15 years so an end of an era for that one. I usually do the cart trail from Opeongo to Dickson but I thought I'd do something different this year I haven't done in a while. I'd do this one again in a heartbeat, only thing is I would single carry, not worth it with the amount of portaging. I can't imagine you would be ahead calorie wise with the extra food vs, extra effort.
