Shall Access Exploratory

Hi all,

I did a day paddle at the start of November out of the Shall Lake access. I used this one to try something different and wrote it as an oral history from the perspective of the things/animals we saw along the way. It’s kind of ridiculous, but was fun to write. (Don’t worry, it’s not gonna be a recurring gimmick). Hope everyone is having a good start to December.

Re: Shall Access Exploratory

Enjoyed your trip report! Had a good laugh when you mentioned: "Shall Lake: “I mean, it’s basically in my name. Add an ‘ow’ and you’ve got a good description of what I’m offering". So true...

Surprised that you saw an RV on that Shirley Lake campsite. As someone who has been in the park during hunting season, totally understand "Drew talking very loudly about how he wasn’t a deer" while on the Oram Lake portage. Would have done the same walking that high ground portage trail. Great to see you all accomplish so much travel on a short November day! Thanks to your report now have to try fried salami.

Sorry my last name is not Shalla... if that's what your asking? Dwight's my real first name. Live near the Ottawa River just outside of the nations capital.

Re: Shall Access Exploratory

That was great, Drew.  I always enjoy inanimate object dialogue (along with a few animated objects!), and this was really well done.

The first trip I ever took my wife on was for a two-night trip on Shirley.  In June...2000.  The mosquitos on the morning of the third day were absurd.  I thought I was hearing chainsaws in the distance but realized it was mosquitos around the tent.  The portage out of Shirley was...I have never experienced so many mosquitos in my life as in those few moments getting set to take the portage.  Nightmarish.  Anyway, in your report, I kept waiting to see "Mosquito:  Boy I wish I was there..."

Re: Shall Access Exploratory

Great read as always! NB don’t worry about hunting. Appreciate your approach but happy to provide some facts.

Re: Shall Access Exploratory

Thanks all, glad you enjoyed it.

Dwight, you haven't lived until you've had a fried salami sandwich in the middle of a long day. And then dealt with the resulting heartburn about two hours later.

Dave, I reached out to the mosquitoes but they weren't taking my calls and I didn't push it too hard. I don't need to hear from them until next spring.

Shanny, hope I didn't cause any offense. If there's anything you think I'm misrepresenting I'd be happy to update it.

Re: Shall Access Exploratory

Not at all. It’s all very cyclical. Responsible hunters know their target and beyond it. So no one needs to be worried about “getting shot.” I’m a hunter. I have the privilege of hunting in Algonquin Park (wmu 54). I’ve come across many hunters who hunt the same area There are many regulations. Everyone abides by them because  it’s  not worth it to lose them.
