2023 Gear Loadout

I am in the process of getting my gear organized for the upcoming season. I hope to post photos when I am finished at the end of April or early May.

I would be very interested to see lists and photos of the equipment and gear others will be packing. Feel free to post your packing lists or gear photos here which may assist others.

Re: 2023 Gear Loadout

Not too many people on this board. I'm surprised.
Here's mine. I actually always went off of my dad's so maybe I am missing something. It's sort of for backcountry and main campground camping, so I'd exclude some items if needed.

Sleeping and shelter: Tent (footprint & poles*) / sleeping bag (liner?) / sleep pad / pillow / tarp.

Camp kitchen: Water filter / food / canteen / stove (back-up?) / wood stove / fuel / lighter / waterproof matches / fire steel / pots / utensils-spatula-cutting board / water bottles / lightweight mugs / plates & bowls / bio soap / dishcloth & steel wool.
Food: Freeze dried meals / fruit or freeze dried fruit – carrot, apple / babybel cheese / consider frozen steak 1st night / protein, granola bars / mio / coffee – sugar, creamer / powdered milk / spices / oats / cereal / ready crisp bacon / kielbasa- must be heavily spiced / milk tea /

Re: 2023 Gear Loadout

I keep a spreadsheet checklist with everything listed out in detail.  Mostly I keep the stuff in my portage pack in various stuff sacks, so I go through the checklist while confirming items are in there.  I'll send it to you in a PM.

Re: 2023 Gear Loadout

I trip solo, with friends who have their own gear, with friends who don’t have much gear, and with a family of four (2 kids under 4), and almost always with a 60lb dog.

Pack out can vary in many ways.  I usually create a list based on each individual trip depending on time of year, potential weather, length of trip and obviously who is coming with me.  Then I’ll lay everything out in the basement from the gear closet and start ticking boxes.

If I’m going solo, I’m more likely to forget the tent poles than if I’m packing for a group, although I once forgot a tent entirely….

Exactly!

Many of my trips are early spring within a week or 2 of ice out or in September/October. Being prepared for snow and temps well below 0C - especially when I've had parent-kid groups with kids as young as 9 - means packing a lot heavier than what I need for an August long weekend trip. As an example even though my Lab is very cold tolerant (she actually enjoys walking in belly deep ice water full of slush at the cottage in March), taking her on our spring trip last week meant packing 2 extra fleece sleeping bag liners just for her.

Re: 2023 Gear Loadout

As with most people, I've got a spreadsheet with all my gear on it, but I also have a list of absolute "base things to touch" when packing up so I don't miss anything critical.

I have a husky/lab/Manitoba special and it's the same way.  She will be swimming in Lake Ontario in December, but on a windy trip in mid October she needs a wool blanket and a little fleece jacket for the night.

Re: 2023 Gear Loadout

...just thought I'd chime in with a couple of additional creature comforts we like for longer trips...

A camp shower can be an awesome treat. The one we have heats up really well in the sun, so no additional heating required.
An extra large ziploc bag to do laundry - using biodegradable camp soap, and optionally some smooth pebbles to help agitate. Feels great to put on 'fresh' clothing!
