I actually didn't even get close enough to the white sign to read it (and zooming in on it isn't helping me now). 

I realized that the trail that I was looking for was not located at the portage, got distracted by the saw, snap some pictures and then got back in the canoe to find my destination.

Pet river between misty and grassy bay... first portage me thinks misty side. You may have been looking for the old portage from misty to the tim river

Not on the Pet.  This river does eventually get to the Pet though.

Is this on the Crow?  By Lavieille?  I think that white sign is similar to one I saw a few years ago from the MECP talking about "predatory black bears" in the area.

That narrows it down.  It is the Crow, however, the actual portage is still not identified. Think “lumber camp”.
