Bug reports?

Hi folks,

I've only been out in the very early spring this year, trapped in the city most of the rest of the summer.
I hear the bugs are bad, and the late spawn has only made them worse.
I'm considering buying a Eureka "No Bug Zone" tarp/shelter for my 7 day trip which starts next weekend, but worry about the cost/weight vs the usefulness of it for this trip.  Normally bugs don't really bother me, but last year they were insane around this time of year.

Thanks,

Ian

Re: Bug reports?

everything is behind 2 weeks?, weather wise ,, cool ,,wet weather,, ideal conditions,, black flies are just peeking now. according to my people,, you gotta swing a axe to catch a breath of air,,
the eureka no bug zone shelter is a great unit, i have one,, 5 lbs. plus?  and bulky,  i just have the shelter rolled up not in a suff bag,,
my good friend swears  that the" thermal-cell" unit from can.tire works miracles on da bugs, runs off butane, canisters, and some pads with bug repellent, light weight , do your own due diligence,, i have one of these units , i have not tested it yet,,  i do not use deet products,

Re: Bug reports?

I like that "you gotta swing an axe to catch a breath of air"

Just spent the weekend in the park at big Porcupine and Ragged Lakes. Black flies were not bad to manageable, except for some hot spots (the take out area from Ragged to go up to Big Porcupine made me actually put on some repellent, which i hardly ever do; like swedish pimple, I also avoid deet, but tried picaridin this time. On the actual trail they were not bad.).

Mosquitoes, however, were between brutal and epic.

Personal Scale: what bugs?, not bad, manageable, pretty bad, brutal, epic, insane (tundra levels)

Re: Bug reports?

Hi Ian,
Bugs are bad this year. Was there the weekend of the 15th and blackflys were tapering off but it is a bumper crop of mosquitoes this year. I'd recommend some sort of mesh shelter just to give you a break.

Re: Bug reports?

Was on Galeiry this past weekend. Our bug shelter was VERY useful....

Re: Bug reports?

Any predictions on how the next few weeks will shape up? I'm considering a short trip the last weekend of July, but I usually like waiting until the bugs calm down and it seems like things are a bit delayed this year. I've had some good and bad trips, bug wise, in late July...

Re: Bug reports?

Hey John! On a side note, not pertaining to this thread. Is there a lot of boat traffic on Galeiry? Wasn't too fond of the idea in thinking of waking up to motors every morning. I was thinking about going there only because there's walleye in the lake. Any info would be great,
Thanks

I'm just gone Fishin!

Re: Bug reports?

Was at Rain Lake last week, left on Saturday.  On the water the bugs weren't too bad, but in camp and at the access point they were horrible.  Mosquitoes in full force from 5pm-11 pm & 5-9:30 am, then deer flies were incessant with the odd swarm of blackflies during the day.

Re: Bug reports?

Just got back from 8 days.  Bugs were only bad on the portages or in the morning/evenings.  Heat has really knocked them down.

Found solace in the bug tarp, thanks to everyone who suggested it.
