Rock Creek and Fork/Norway

I’m doing a trip with some buddies in mid September and am looking at a couple of options for the route, including a loop out of Rock Lake, up through Fork/Norway to Sproule/Sunday, then back by way of Whitefish. Questions I’ve got are:

1.What’s Rock Creek like between Gordon and Fork? Are water levels likely to be a problem in September?

2. Would you stay on Fork or Norway?

3. Sunday or Sproule?

4. Is this route worth doing? I could always hit these parts another time as day trips if it’s not worth the overnight. I want it to be an interesting trip for my friends.

Thanks,

Drew

Re: Rock Creek and Fork/Norway

1. No info here sorry

2. I researched these lakes last season and it seemed like Norway had big sites, but possible overgrown with uneven ground? Couldn't really find the best images. Fork had one really crappy site and then the island seemed like a good site if you have decent weather - so seems like a good option if you're able to book both campsites.

3. Check my website, I have pictures of all 5 campsites from Sproule. Sunday the island is a great site but the others didn't look as good, so you're rolling the dice with the odds not being in your favour. Sproule you have 2 good sites, 1 ok site, and 2 crappy sites. So another roll of the dice but with slightly better odds.

4. One thing I don't like about the route is that you're staying close to the highway the whole time, but that's personal preference, I like to go outwards from hwy 60, not stick beside it lol. But the overnight I did on Sproule was definitely very pretty - the morning fog on Sunday Lake with the calm water (check my trip report) was one of the most beautiful views I've had in Algonquin.

Thanks Trippy,

This is great. I’ll check that report out for sure. I agree re the getting away from hwy 60, but it’s an area I want to check out eventually regardless so I figured I’d give it as an option this time around. (I’m also looking at a loop up to Lavielle and, maybe, trying my luck out of Kiosk again)

Re: Rock Creek and Fork/Norway

Figured there was a reason you'd want to be in this area.  Mark (in the park) has a trip log on Norway/Fork I think along with Sunday creek.  I can't speak to them other than the Sunday end.  Trippy has it right about Sunday.  The island site is the best of the 3 - gently worn but also the nicest.  Next I'd pick the site down near where Sunday creek exits the lake.  The third site across from the island seems like a spill over option for the island.  Fine i guess but it is a small lake and if someone is on the island I wouldn't really want to be across from them.  Sunday seems more like a full pond than a lake per se.  I wouldn't plan on swimming but it is nice all the same - from reports I've seen, Sproule seems more "swimmable".  2 years ago mid Sept i was setting up on Thurs and saw a cow and later a bull moose by the Sproule portage.  Did not expect them to be so close in while things were still busy on 60.

That was basically my reasoning for going to Sproule. I wanted to check it out eventually and I got to the park without any reservation and had my eye on Sproule... it had 0/5 at the time, so I took advantage of that and booked it. My other option was going from Smoke to McGarvey but that would be a really long day including double carries and it was going to be 30 degrees out, so I opted for the easier route lol

There was plenty of moose scat directly at, and behind my campsite on Sproule, and I heard a lot of 'loud animal noises' from a couple hundred metres away inland (presumably moose). It was also mid September for me
