La Muir campsites - recommendations?

The delayed ice-out caused me to book a new route, which now has me spending two nights on La Muir. I've been there before, but not for many years and I have no recollection of any sites on the lake. Since it's my one and only rest day, I'd like to have a decent site to enjoy it on! Which sites should I be looking at?

Uppa......the site on the big island is a really nice site.  The other two decent sites I remember are on the point where the 3 campsites are close to each other and the other on the point near the big island campsite.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

You might have to share LaMuir with motored fishermen.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

The second trip to the park that the girlfriend/wife and I ever took had us staying on Lake la Muir where we stayed on one of the cluster of 3, can’t remember which one. But I do remember looking out from the site and just thinking that it was so beautiful. She still reminds me about how I used to just go on and on about it. I’m not sure if the site was really all that great or if I was just enamoured with being deep in the park and having a nice view. I always think of la Muir fondly.

It disturbs me inside that they allow motors on a lake so deep in the park ... or on any lake in the park.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about the boats. Maybe I'll spend those two days on Burntroot instead.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

How would you get a boat into La Muir? Is there a road that goes there? Are there even any cottages there / who would be the ones using the boats?

I don't know what the rest of your route looks like, and I've never been to La Muir, but I will say that I really really like Burntroot. Lots of great sites, and if you're there during ice out, you might be able to snag Anchor Island.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

There are no cottages on LaMuir.

I have witnessed fishermen carrying a small boat and motor into LaMuir via the portage from Hogan.

Also, if you have Indian Card status, I believe they can drive pretty close to the lake.  I have seen fishermen with a motor boat on Catfish Lake some years ago.  I can't say 100% if this still applies to fishermen with Indian Card status.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

I doubt many would bring a boat an motor into La Muir.  I also would not opt for the Anchor site in cold may weather.  A cold, windy, snowy day might be better ridden out in a sheltered area.  Now, if it's bluebird weather, sure!

I find it strange that there is such a disdain for multi-use, legal users of the park.  I understand offense and disdain for illegal activities like littering, bringing cans/bottles, noise, etc.  Tolerance and exclusivity are funny things.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

I don't know about disdain, but motor boats is something I don't have to drive 9+ hours to Algonquin to find. Combined with overcrowding of the park it makes a cocktail I find not to my taste. Nothing to do with tolerance. And it's a fact of life that littering in places accessible to motorized vehicles or boats is much higher than otherwise.

Re: La Muir campsites - recommendations?

I have no disdain for those who (legally) take motorboats into the park - they're doing what they're allowed to do. But as Eddy said, I don't go into the backcountry to spend days listening to motorboats.

More than anything, motorboats destroy the illusion (because in Algonquin, that's what it is) that I'm somewhere truly remote. Sure it might have taken me days of hard work to get there, but that's only because i'm not legally allowed to take the roads we all try to pretend don't exist.
