Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

With all this rain we're receiving, i think those of you that are booked the week beginning May 5th are not that far off the mark. In fact i believe May 5th or 6th may be ice out. Or am i being too optimistic?

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

I feel like May 10 is going to end up being opening day. That would work well with a May 6 ice out, so I hope you’re right.

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

Swift Fifteen: I would like to be as optimistic as you are. How do you manage to maintain such a rosy outlook about APP opening day in the face of such overwhelming evidence to the contrary: snow, sleet, flooding and sub-zero temps. Haven't you noticed? It's fook-ing Armageddon out there!  What's your secret, sir? Is it daily yoga classes?  Zumba with mall-walking on alternate days? Or is it something much simpler like, say, shortbread cookies with your tea?   Fool that I am, in a demented moment of wishful thinking in mid-winter I chose May 5th. And I stubbornly clung to her as the ice around me grew ever thicker and more permanent. Men, as  your noble captain, it's only fair that I announce my intention to go down with the ship. Ice as far as the eye can see, and yet, the band played on...

I was May 5th, but I am pretty sure this is too optimistic - because of work, our trip was adjusted to May 20th, so I think we'll be good for then!

So a may 10th put in at access 3 is looking worse and worse 😥

Swan, my gloom was not meant to be contagious. Rejoice, o wingèd brother of the tundra and of many a doubtful urban slough!  Can one not "but feel the strange heart beating where it lies?" Your May 10th start is safer than Canada Savings Bonds. I would even go so far as to bet Swift Fifteen's shiny new canoe on it!

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

Last year it was way colder and people were way less optimistic and it opened before the 10th. We are pushing out on the 13th from Cedar and my birthday is the 12th, so I say it'll be a nice birthday present for me.

FOAP is predicting a Single Digits May ice out. Let’s hope for early single digits!

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

Wow, that's quite an image on FOAP! Never seen the water anywhere near that info board before. Here's a couple images from my trip across the Highway 60 corridor yesterday afternoon (thanks again to Barry for getting me over the hump on picture posting!). Shots of Smoke, LOTR and Brewer, respectively. It was amazing to see the change in ice conditions from the lakes to the south of the Park (used Hwy 118 on my way to Gravenhurst to pick up my boat) to those within it. Muskoka shows very thin ice on the lakes, while these shots reveal much healthier coverage. Yet the rivers and creeks are all bare and fast flowing. And there was plenty of bare ground -- though predictably much more to my left than to my right as I passed from West to East.

Those photos are a little disappointing, looks pretty thick still, but the satellite photo just posted shows pretty grey ice, and dry clear land all around the 'dome,' which is encouraging!

Hey, cut that out or I'll throw a yoke at ya.. lol

P.s. that poem has always sounded a bit pornographic to me.

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

When will they make the call on the May 3rd opening? Either to push it back or call ice out?

Re: ice out 2019 - too early to discuss?

The next two days are cloudy so there won’t be any clear satellite pics. Since rain and wind is forecast for Wednesday I think they will have an aircraft flyover early Thursday morning with an announcement by noon latest. Sadly I am pretty sure I won’t be happy  with the news.

Moonman.
