Re: Where in Algonquin #254

North end of Manitou looking south toward the island in front of Pine Island?

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

Nope. Not Manitou, nor North Tea, either.

We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it.

Not Lavieille, not Robinson. But you are both getting warmer...

Big Trout, somewhere toward the east end.

You got it. Looking southeast [zoomed] from the campsite on the northern peninsula.
Here’s another view from a greater distance.

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

I believe I have stood at this very spot! As soon as the clues pointed this way I remembered seeing this island site while paddling toward Merchant a couple years back. It certainly stands out! No doubt a great swimming spot, though it doesn't look the greatest for landing in a wind.

Will see what I can come up with for #255...

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

It’s taken from site 36 on the map below looking at the small island with campsite 11 on it. The actual campsite is on the far side of the island—the exposed area in the photo faces west...i guess it is a sunset viewing area, maybe once a campsite...I never stopped there.

In shaggy’s recent trip report, they stayed at site 36. It’s a big site with a nice side entrance.

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

That did use to be a campsite through the 80's and into the early 90's.  Not sure why it was decommissioned as it was a really great site with nice long views of the lake.

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

In the past I was thinking that campsite 36 would be a great place to stay on Big Trout. I’ve passed through several times but never had the pleasure of spending the night. I’m curious, how do you know it’s been decommissioned?

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

If I may speak for him/her, Tripper isn’t talking about 36. That site is alive and well, and recommended. Tripper is referring to the site on the end of the island that is visible in the top photo at the beginning of this thread. [campsite 11 is on the opposite end of that island].

Re: Where in Algonquin #254

That’s for the clarification. Pehaps one year I’ll psych myself up for the long journey in and use that site to get my “big lake fix”
