Questions about campsites on Islet, Fork, Norway

Islet

Does anyone have pictures of the campsites? I've seen pictures of the site on the west shore, near the portage to Hot Lake, and the island site, but haven't seen any others.

I like scenic sites, ones that are large, open rock to suntan/stargaze, views of sunset/sunrise, etc... are these sites going to be what I'm looking for?

I see 7 backcountry sites and 5 hiking sites, but online reservation only shows that they book 3 for backcountry and 4 for hiking. 4/5 makes sense but 3/7 seems unusual... is this actually how many they reserve?

Fork and Norway

So I've read that the shore site on Fork is pretty crappy but the island site is great - it shows these as poorly maintained campsites... in what way is the island bad? For Norway, what condition are the sites in? I've seen a few pictures from the water but doesn't really show inside the sites.

Based on what I mentioned above about liking scenic campsites, these both seem to be good options, other than the shore site on Fork. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Any issues with hwy noise from either of these sites, since they're both pretty close to the hwy?

Thanks in advance

I am sure you have seen the write up with pics in the PCI inventory on this site, but in case you haven't there is one for island site on Fork, sorry I haven't been to this area so can't offer any other advise.

Seems like it. Although I hate having my heart set on a specific site when it's not the only reservation on the lake... don't want to get my hopes up

That's why I'm curious if they truly only take 3 reservations when there's 7 sites. If the island is gorgeous, and there are 1 or 2 other nice ones, then I might roll the dice.

Yup I've seen that, thanks. I searched for trip reports on google and found some better pics as well... it looks like my ideal site, my only concern is being overly exposed in bad weather (obviously unpredictable though), and proximity to the hwy. I wonder why it's "poorly maintained"; fire pit, tent spot and thunderbox seem alright in the PCI report...

Re: Questions about campsites on Islet, Fork, Norway

Hi - I stayed on Islet last year with my kids.  We had the site immediately opposite the island site.  The water access was not particularly open, but I felt the campsite area was pretty open, and  you can make it to the hiking trail in back of the site without too much effort.  There is a rocky outcropping area that is fairly easy to get to, and that has some southern exposure and a fairly wide view of that end of the lake.  This is the site about which I made comments about mice earlier today - we had plenty at dusk on night one, virtually none on night two, go figure.  For what this is worth - both my kids like the site.

The campsite immediately to the south of this site is one (or maybe west, it is the next one along the shore as you get closer to Weed, but is not the hiking trail campsite)  that we checked out, and we did not think too much of it.  No thunderbox that we saw, but I'm guessing there is one there somewhere.   Barely room to manage a tent.  It was one of those site you take when necessity dictates and you aren't quite as picky.

Here is the link to the trip report - there are several pictures of this campsite.  They weren't really sufficient for a PCI report, but for the purposes of showing you what the site looked like they are adequate.  I don't think any pictures are from the rocky outcropping I mentioned that is nearby (the big rock you see my kids walking on is at the portage from Islet to Weed)

I think it's truly 3/7, perhaps the others are there to provide emergency spots for backpackers?

I checked out the two sites across from the island as well, the one directly across (I believe that don'tgroandaddy is referring to) looked quite good (though buggy in the wrong season) and the one further south wasn't that great.

Thanks for the info and thanks for linking to the trip report. I remember reading that when you originally posted it actually, just didn’t realize it was Islet... wasn’t doing my Islet research at the time

Seems like a decent site, thanks again for sharing

That’s what I was originally thinking, more emergency sites.. still 7/12 combined seems low but not complaining since it would work in my favor lol

Thanks for the info on the other sites as well, seems to be the same as the other comment
