Algonquin Park camper seriously injured during wild storm
The Ontario Provincial Police report that two individuals camping in the northeastern part of Algonquin Park were impacted by Saturday night's wicked storm when a tree fell, resulting in serious injuries to one person.
"The injured individual was transported out of the park by a Ministry of Natural Resources float plane and is being taken to the hospital for treatment," the OPP stated in a Sunday morning release.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising the public that Highway 17 remains closed between Bonfield and Mattawa due to hazardous road conditions caused by severe weather and downed trees.
The Mike Rodden Arena in Mattawa remains open as a shelter for anyone in need of a safe place to stay.
On Saturday, June 21, 2025, at approximately 9:45 p.m., reports of dangerous conditions were received from several areas, including Champlain Park.
"The closure remains in effect as emergency crews are actively working in the area to assess damage, clear debris, and assist those affected," the OPP added.
Coats, blankets, water and batteries were made available to individuals affected by the closure at Champlain Park.
"If you are currently delayed due to road closures or sheltering in place, please remain patient and stay where you are if it is safe to do so. Emergency responders are working as quickly and safely as possible to reopen routes and provide assistance. Entering restricted areas may delay emergency efforts and put yourself and others at risk," the OPP continued.
Additional resources, including Emergency Response Teams (ERT), Canine units, fire services, and military support from Petawawa, have been deployed to assist with the response.

Speculate that if it's difficult to find shelter from the wind and falling branches/debris, maybe crawling under a secured canoe could be an option?

Just read that Highway 630 from Highway 17 to Kiosk is closed with hundreds of campers stuck at Kiosk and will have to be flown out.

Given the heat today (hopefully not as hot there as it is here in Ottawa) there could be some downstream consequences with people being unable to get out over the next couple of days as well.

My buddy and I were talking about this on our spring trip. We were thinking trying to find a large rock to huddle against maybe?

Every location would be a bit different I think. I would be out of my tent for sure. Can’t avoid what you can’t see and the tent offers zero protection. In that kind of wind a canoe isn’t going to do you any good either. I was in a storm once no where close to what happened here and the wind threw my canoe 30 ft. If there was an open area I would head there.. even better if that area is low lying. Flying debris branches etc will be one of your main risks. Get low or lie flat. Cover my head and neck with a well filled pack for protection.
If there are no open areas but if the site had a beach or a shoreline that didn’t drop off quickly I might wander out there away from the trees with my PFD on and get low and ride it out.
Oh..and crap my pants. That step would be very important.

Wow, that's crazy...
Thoughts are with the 13 year old and his family for a speedy recovery without long term impacts. Hopefully everyone else in the backcountry made out okay.
