I haven't booked anything yet .. traditionally I go during the week and so I've never had trouble getting sites so I book closer to leaving .. but for those that are booking more recently, is it also booked up a lot mid week?

If the answer is yes then that's a big miscalculation on my part ..

It depends on when, and where. If "where" is any of the lakes that are easy to get to, and "when" is any time after the bugs start subsiding, then you're probably in trouble. If the "where" is more remote or the "when" is bug season, then you're probably fine.

Rent a Swift pack boat. The carry space and stability of a canoe but the paddling (and to some extent the speed) of a kayak. I know Algonquin Outfitters rents them.

Having not actually been out yet this year, I still feel safe in calling it a low water year - not much snow, and a bone-dry Spring. So if you were ever to get in trouble in July on Maple Creek it just might be this year. But I don't think I've heard of it becoming downright unnavigable, so I imagine you'll survive. Upstream isn't terribly fun - the 805 meter portage, in particular, is a very steep climb.

Maple and Erables are both nice, as UpTheCreek said. I'm partial to the two island sites next to each other on the South of Maple - they're both really nice - but then of course you've also got a good chance of having a neighbour very close.

Well I can't get away for long right now, but I just have to go. So I'm headed for Ralph Bice on Friday for two nights. Me and my bug spray and my bug jacket and my bug tent.

Edit: oh, right - it turns out maybe I should check with my wife first! Heading Sunday to Access 1 instead. On the bright side I added in an extra day, so it’s a fair trade.

Not Round Island. This lake is three short portages away from the nearest access point.

I've stayed on that campsite - it does indeed have some amazing views.

Francis it is!

I had that site reserved for May 24th.

As you say "that site" I wonder if you mean St. Francis, which only has one campsite? Francis Lake has a few.

I've stayed on the St. Francis site. Nice dead-end lake for total seclusion. The campsite was a bit challenging with virtually nowhere to set up a tent on flat ground, and lots of poison ivy.
