Peek, I used a direct quote. There was no mis-quote.
I can accept that I possibly read your intention incorrectly, but I never misquoted anything.

I would hate to see the program go – but I would also hate to pay even higher fees next year for backcountry camping
Perhaps I am wrong but I'm quite certain that the vast majority of revenue in Algonquin is derived from the campgrounds, the contracted stores(P-store, Opeongo Store, Lake of Two rivers) and cottage/camp/hotel leases. I suspect backcountry fees are a tiny portion of revenues likely not even covering the cost of trail/campsite/portage maintenance which are likely subsidized by the larger group of users I mentioned above. I am a user of both backcountry and front country algonquin and I would hate to see the wolf howl go, but backcountry fees aren't going up as a result of them. Nor will they start charging for them, if it cannot be covered through current revenue it will likely just be cut. I don't know of any other programs in Algonquin that require fees, although they might exist.

This is really unfortunate. Sometimes common sense just isn't very common. Hopefully something can be worked out over the winter or I could see this great park attraction disappearing.

You will be very hard pressed to get people to how up their favorite secluded spot. from coon lake I would get in the canoe and head south on rock lake. Take a portage to pen or Louisa and find a spot to hang out for the day but know that all the sites will be booked for the long weekend so you can't occupy a camp site. If you are willing to spend some money for this adventure go to opeongo and get a water taxi up the lake and spend your time at the east arm beach.

That picture Barry posted is indeed the OPE staff residence. The room on the far right was mine for several summers. Great summer job, lots of opportunities for paddling, swimming, hiking. To the right of that building is another residence for the permit office staff.
Wildlife » Turtle & bear » 8/24/2015 6:42 am |
While backpacking the highland trail in uly with my family we had a turtle about this size show up at the waters edge for a while. We had a campsite with a large waterfront so we went swimming over at the opposite end of the campsite. With 4 of us in the water playing around and splashing it still swam over to investigate us. We hadn't noticed it swimming over but my older son had his goggles on and when he went under he came face to face with it. It was shallow water so he stood up; it turned quickly and swam away but scratched him in the process. Really freaked him out for a while but he was back in the water not too long after.

I really like the ability to view new threads/unviewed threads.. Make it really quick and easy to see what's most active, while the things less talked about fade into the background until needed at a later date/someone searches for it.
The forum is really poor for viewing on an iPhone in mobile view. I cant figure out how to use it at all an basically have to click on each sub forum to see if there is anything new. I prefer the old forum at this point but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

My family and I hiked in to Guskewau for an overnight stay between 29-30 July. Bugs were not bad during the hike but picked up a little during the evening at the campsite. Would likely be less now. If you are considering it, you can likely handle late august bugs.
