Trip Planning » Recommendations for gettin' the big one. » 4/28/2018 6:36 am |
We are heading out of Kiosk on May 15 (ice skates or canoes, either way). Any tips/secrets/tricks to landing a big lake trout? We've done pretty well last three years with a 7 pounder, 5 pounder, and 4 pounder, but basically only one or two per trip. Any favorite lures/bait we should try? Depths? Cast vs. troll? Also, thoughts on fishing on Mouse and Maple Lake? Thanks!
Equipment » Thoughts on Langford Nahanni? » 4/28/2018 6:29 am |
I am thinking about buying a used Langford Nahanni. It is 16'5" and kevlar, weighing in around 49 pounds, likely a little more than advertised weight due to added skid plates, etc. The longest trip we take each year is 5 nights and mostly flat water. Occasionally, if we are in a bind, we will duff the odd numbered person in the middle for a trip, plus our gear. We've added a third in 16' boats several times before (Old Town Discovery). Seeing I'm from Vermont, I'm not as familiar with this Canadian brand. We also portage a fair amount. Basically, I'm looking for a good work horse, that I don't need to treat like a china doll, that can handle a third or large load, and doesn't kill my names on the long hikes. Thoughts?

Hi everyone, I received my map in the mail yesterday. I ended my paypal dispute. Hope everyone else has the same luck. Thanks to ATVenture for his willingness to lend me his.

Fortunately, I paid with paypal so I was able to dispute the transaction and am backed by paypal's fraud protection services. I also alerted them to the potential that he's using the website to rip people off. If you used paypal, you should file a dispute and a complaint.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, anyone have a Western Section of the map I can buy? We are leaving in two weeks out of Kiosk and don't have the map.

Last year we canoed May 14-19 leaving out of Cedar Lake. We had some black flies on the portages, but didn't get slammed until the last night when we camped on Bug Lake... go figure.

Thanks everyone! That's super helpful advice. We like to camp along a river to change things up, but the sites are really that bad on Maple Creek? Any pics? I hate camping on the lake that we pull out of the next day, it's like you can see the end of your trip. Know what I mean?
I know it would be a lot more paddling, but thoughts on Kiosk-Waterclear-Maple-Manitou-Amable (or reverse)? Does Manitou have houses on it? Motorboat traffic? Are the sites on Amable nice?
Also, any other recommendations for good loops that I'm not seeing? Like I said, we are coming from Vermont, so Kiosk and Cedar are a manageable drive for pushing out the same day. Western side of the park would probably be tough.

My favorite trip was Cedar to Luckless on night one via Petawawa. The site on Luckless is gorgeous and the lake is beautiful. Night two on Shangri La, as known, it's one of the most gorgeous sites in the park, and then final night by the Falls. The campsite isn't that great, but the Falls is beautiful. Portages are not bad and you get out there quickly.

We are planning a 5 day trip on this loop. Will likely push out early afternoon and head to White Birch. Any recommendations on best camp site? Worth going down to the southern site on Water Clear, or is White Birch nice?
Day two we plan on staying on one of the small lakes. Thoughts on Club vs. Mouse vs. Big Thunder? Looking for remote, beautiful, with an opportunity to catch some trout. Heard the beach on Mouse is nice, but Big Thunder also looks great.
Day 3/4, we plan on spending on one of the islands on Maple. Any recommendations for best island site? We will be taking our day off here, so something where we can relax and enjoy and fish.
Finally we will do night 5 somewhere on Maple Creek. Is there a nice site along the river?
Couple additional questions: Will this route be busy second week of May? Heard some complaints about truck noise, is that an issue on this route? Also, does it make more sense to go counter-clockwise, or is clock-wise better?
Two years ago we did Cedar-Petawawa-Luckless-Catfish (Shangri La for 2 nights)- Falls- Cedar. Last year we did, Cedar- Laurel- Little Cauchon- Carl Wilson- Bug- Cedar. Will this year's proposed route give us a similar adventure? Other must-do loops that you'd recommend (we are coming from Vermont)?
Thanks everyone. Dying to get out there!
