I highly recommend the Lion's Head Provincial Nature Reserve, I've camped there a couple times. Beautiful views, good challenging hike and a decent little camping area that was a little busy last summer, not so much in the shoulder seasons. I've also hiked the Forty Hills/White Bluff trail just to the north across Isthmus Bay, also a good hike, less challenging.

Go Leafs.

I've had some success smallmouth fishing on Rain Lake. Apparently there are trout in the lake, I've never caught one there. I think you'd have better luck if you hit the access points north of Rain Lake. Also, I'm not a fly fisherman, so someone else will be able to give you better advice on that.

I must be lucky, for the most part the times on Jeff's maps seem to fit my travel speeds. Obviously this varies a little with wind/weather/partner etc. and I always give myself a couple extra hours/day as a contingency.

Things can change pretty drastically year to year, but you should be fine at that time. If water levels are close to what they were last year, definitely good to go. You will have a couple beaver dams to pullover, but nothing difficult. Take a bug jacket or head net.

I did this stretch around October 20th last year, 2017. Surprisingly, no issues at all, lots of water and alders weren't a problem either. There were a couple pullovers, but not nearly as many as are indicated on Jeff's Map Version 5.0 (thankfully!).

I say go for it!

Hey Ash,

I use my iphone 5s on portages quite often, with Jeffs map loaded onto the Avenza maps app. It has really come in handy a few times and has never let me down. I usually trip on the west side of the park, and it came in really handy once trying to find my into Ragged lake from Crown lake.

I've never not been able to get a gps signal within a minute or 2 while in the bush.

Last season I went in access #4 Rain Lake in November for a little solo kayak trip. I called the park office, not ontario parks, on my way and they gave me a permit # to write on a piece of paper and leave on my dashboard. Not sure if I even needed it, but it's not too expensive. I doubt they were checking permits. I am planning on doing the same thing tomorrow morning.

That's alright, I don't expect anyone to give up their spots, I certainly wouldn't advertise the ones I have found either.

Anybody done any fishing on Maple Lake? Thinking about heading up that way, I know the Trout will be deep in July. I don't want to waste my time fishing there if there's no fish. I'm open to suggestions, keeping in mind we are going for Brook Trout.

Hey folks, I'm a rookie fisherman, took it up last summer, mostly smallmouth fishing. I did some AP trout fishing over the long weekend, and had some success. I was under the impression the lake we were fishing (not sure I can name it, don't know what rules are for that) had only brookies and lakers, so I thought this was a Brook trout. When I got home I showed a friend pictures of our catch, and his opinion was that they were splake.
