Thanks for the options, folks.  Perhaps a seat-backer would do just fine for her...

Rats...that's the style that I've found to be a little "iffy" over time.  Maybe I'll look at some different designs of that style.  I've used them before an they help, but they seem to prematurely break down (maybe it's because I'm a bit of an ox).

In order to extend our canoe trips in greater comfort, I purchased the Harmony folding cane canoe seat for my wife (link below).  Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the front or back of our Swift Prospector (although it does fit the back of my Souris River 17' which makes me quite comfortable, but raises the ire of the individual whom I was trying to comfort).

So I was wondering, what do you folks recommend/use for back support in a canoe?  We normally canoe seated instead of kneeling; generally for leisure and enjoyment.  I've tried some of the fabric/aluminum 'sit-backers' but haven't been particularly satisfied with their quality - they seem to sag into lay-z-boy mode after a few trips and don't offer the needed support.

After looking at the design, I think I could make a custom version of the Harmony that would fit both canoes in the front seat but it would test the limits of my woodworking tools and I would have to learn to cane something (I would be proud to tell someone that I know how to cane a seat though).

@JoeSchmoe - One minor point of correction:  an RO factor above 1.0 doesn't automatically mean the growth is exponential.  Low values just over 1.0 would result in sub-exponential growth; values over 2.0 would generally result in exponential growth assuming no other control factors.

@ Marko - thanks a bunch - I'll keep my eyes open for the journal-based research - I know it's going on like gangbusters but I have a jaded eye towards media sources and research data...always seems skewed with publisher's bias.

@Solos - your cheeks are exposed...black flies will murder you.  It is incredible how they exploit any exposed, untreated skin.

Alphabetical?  By geography?  By physical folded size?

@Marko - I'd be interested to read the peer-reviewed published data about "the data that indicates Covid19-related deaths only accounting for 50% of excess mortality" if you have a link to it and it's not too much of a bother to post it.  My search of google scholar on the subject came up pretty empty - one study specifically related to cardiac disease and transplant patients in Italy that isn't at all representative of the full patient population.

@JoeScmoe - you don't seem to understand that what Jdbonney and others have said is not to focus on one inaccurate indicator.  For some reason you myopically focus that if we have enough ICU beds we should all return to our normal lives.

The reason there are ICU beds available is two-fold - we have been social distancing/reducing interactive activities coupled with a reduction in the frequency of non-emergent surgical procedures.  Due to those two factors, we have room in the ICUs and other floors of the hospitals that aren't as acute-care focused.  You have also introduced yet another "my brother talks to doctors and we have a high death rate" which is a single snapshot, rife with bias and inaccuracy.  If someone is critically ill at home they should go to the hospital and as you have repeatedly stated, there should be plenty of room for them in an ICU to get the care they need.

What I would call the true tragedy of this is that we live in the information age and not everyone is using it.  People in the middle ages had little knowledge of what the plague was or how to stop it.  We know genetically what this virus is, how it is transferred, how to slow it and, eventually, how to stop it.  Yet we hear these voices that say "let's live in the 1300's"...

Fortunately, most elected leaders base their decisions to preserve public safety upon informed scientific data and not the stories they have been hearing.  They could easily change these dates if progress is made.

Perhaps a good analogy would be you have just run your canoe through a stretch of whitewater and you've taken on about six inches in the bottom of the boat.  Do you stop and empty that out or do you go full speed ahead into the next rapids with that water sloshing around?

@geologicaldust - if you haven't checked it out, you should see some of Bob & Diana McElroy's Bush Log.  They've got a keen eye for all things natural including geological observations.

Our trip is planned this year for mid-August around the new moon and I'm hopeful that we still have the opportunity to go.  Five nights base camping on Booth's Lake - day trips, fishing, swimming, star-gazing, game-playing, etc.  I'm optimistic that we'll be able to do it but won't start de-hydrating until July or when re-open notifications come through.

We are in uncharted waters that have substantial impacts on our behaviors, activities and thoughts.  There has been and continues to be an impact on the physical and emotional well-being of many members of our society.  I believe it is good to have these discussions and, to some extent, therapeutic to consider options, discuss impact and explore our feelings on the matter.  Many of us have referred to the positive emotional impact a trip into the lakes and woods of Algonquin make us feel - this pandemic is impacting many in real, measured ways and in many subliminal ways.

I also believe the importance of many of our previously treasured pastimes (i.e. sports, camping, etc.) have been given a powerful reality check of just where they rank in comparison to the value of a life.  The decisions being made for us by our elected leaders should be respected and adhered to - the sooner we are able to get to manageable levels of infections, coupled with appropriate guidelines for interaction, the sooner we will get back to the pastimes we enjoy.  Granted, canoeing will get approval far earlier than attendance at a hockey game, but both will come and both will come faster if we work together.

A large contributor to Germany's partial re-opening is a very aggressive testing program that they are putting into place.  They were already among the leading countries in the number of tests conducted per 1 million population and they have plans in place to monitor exposures and testing to control outbreaks or to inform them of needed roll-backs in re-opening.

The most impressive response, in my opinion, was from South Korea where they combined a rigorous digital tracking method including cell phone location and video surveillance to identify and backtrack for other exposures.  Those mechanisms work well in highly developed, densely populated countries but aren't an appropriate fit for Canada, US, etc. where the geography, infrastructure and political freedoms are not designed for adoption.

"camp seasoning", you could call it.

Hunting in the Czech Republic a few years ago with my coworker resident, Jakub...after driving through fields and forests we stopped into a pub for dinner.  He pointed to the branches and leaves under the front of his Skoda and said "forest mascara".  Same concept...different medium.

The tail end of a father/son May trout trip in 1979 to Lavieille; weather was terrible all week and bad enough to keep us off the water for a couple days.  We planned on fish for dinner most nights so we were rationing food and losing weight.

On the way out my dad caught a big laker and we were all excited for a meal of protein.  We were going to camp in the meadow about 1/3 of the way out the Dickson/Bonfield portage but ran into a couple local boys on their way in who were carrying burlap bags of carrots and potatoes.  The win on our side was we got much more bulk in veggies to feed 8 mouths and the win on their side was a much higher quality meal of fresh laker vs. root cellar leftovers.  Both parties were happy with the exchange.

Side note:  we were boiling the veggies over the fire in big coffee cans and one of the kids running around knocked one over onto the ground...we all bent over and picked up all the big pieces of food, wiped them off and tossed 'em back in the can.

Never used one.  Seems large, awkward and heavy.  That being said, I would like the table/seat factor of it but I'm afraid that every time you sit on it someone would want a cracker and you'd be up and down all day.

When we do hang the food bag, it is much easier if you use a pulley on the end of a rope.  To help your accuracy, throw your rope by aiming for a point about 1.5-2 meters higher than the branch you want to go over...the drag of the rope will reduce the altitude of the throw.

@John Connelly - that is one of the wonderful shocks to alert you that your summer interior trip is over...when you get a drink with ice in it or an ice cream cone.  Will be interesting to see how this matter evolves...one of the most remarkable characteristics of the pandemic is the glacial pace of the changes and developments as the data slowly accumulates.  I think a lot of people don't like the 'limbo' aspect.
