Thanks for that. We would definitely not be going for the title but would see just how fast we could do it. We are both 29 and in reasonable tripping shape but would want to fitness up a bit over the next few months and spend more time in the canoe too. Some helpful insight though. Thanks.

I'm interested in fit ess requirements for this. Anyone have any ideas on what it might take to be really ready? I told my wife about this and she said I have to do it. She won't lol but she wants me to do it with a good friend of mine.

Might be a tad obvious but can never go wrong with good old walking. I have a fitbit and count calories. Both keep me active and eating healthy. But I find it isn't quite enough, so I also jog and do Insanity workouts (High intensity intervals - very good and fun). I struggle with shin splints though. 5'6" and ~185 lbs, target weight is 150 to 160. I'm down from 220 about two years ago, and still dropping. Time is tough though. Too much life happening. I'm 29.

I recall a post on the old forum of a bear encounter at the Faya site which reinforced our decision to not stick around for breakfast as I had a feeling it may very well be the same one.

That was my post from a trip in June. There were three bears on the Faya site that startled us quite a lot. Glad to hera you had a better experience with them than we did! The Faya site is a beauty - I guess the bears agree! It was clean when we were there as well.

Full disclosure, I work for AO. No need to wait until spring, it is used canoe season at our Oxtongue Lake store. Not allowed to post a link yet, so follow these directions:

Thank you! Might be there in Oct, if all goes according to plan! Hopefully there are some left......

We woke up to unexpected snow following a post-May 24 weekend backpacking trip this year. Not fun if you're not prepared. Toques are a must for me.

What kind of dog? If its a long-haired breed that is used to being outdoors, odds are good that not much will be needed. Something to get them off the ground at night will be appreciated I'm sure though.

So this brings up a question I had last weekend as a a snapper about this big swam up to our landing/swimming area.

Are they a risk for swimming? Never heard of a snapper taking a chuck out of someone. But having my daughter swimming in that area got me thinking.

I would guess they are going to take off with any humans splashing around . Anyone have any info to the contrary?

I've never heard of anyone having a chunk taken out of them... but I do have first-hand experience.

A few years back I was up on Kashe Lake at a friend's cottage. He has a nice big dock that sticks out into the deep water about 25 ft. The water there is about 12 ft deep and slopes upwards to shore from the edge of the dock. I was hanging off the dock on the ladder, and I was the only one in the water. Really nice day, just enjoying summer.

10 minutes passed by of me hanging when I felt what I think was a claw scraping across my chest. I immediately and quickly pushed backwards off the ladder, and on my way backwards I felt another scrape. I freaked out, yelled and splashed, and then immediately bolted out of the water. When I got out of the water, I still wasn't sure what had happened - fish, turtle, stick?? - but my chest was bleeding. Well, to be more specific, my left nipple was bleeding. And really not very much. Whatever got me was enough to break the skin on my nipple.

Within about 2 minutes or less, the group of us were standing on the dock and we watched a big snapping turtle swim out from under the dock towards the shore line. It was large - I think one of the reasons I wasn't hit harder than I was is the turtle literally couldn't fit through the ladder. When I backed away from the ladder, I assume it got stuck and wasn't able to make it through. Either that, or I scared it with movements. Or both. Not really sure.

So I got away lucky. Had it actually snapped and hit me full force, I'd have been in the hospital, I'm sure with a wound deep enough that m

I read this, thank you so much for posting it. Urgh, what a hassle! And with such good intentions too. Glad it worked out in the end, even if it did take far too long!

That story is enough to make me seriously reconsider my plan. The Killarney sale posted by Marko might be a better option. I'll have to do some more digging!

Yeah the guy I got talking to at TPS said they sold way more canoes than they had expected to, and even more than they were planning to sell on the first day. He said usually it's a week or so, but this year was less than a day. If I did go for it, I'd probably camp the night before & be there bright & early.

Hello all,

I'm considering trying to convince my wife to let me buy a used canoe from The Portage Store during their annual spring sale of rentals. I got talking to one of their sales people a few weeks ago and some of the deals on those sound pretty good, if you can get a few or more seasons out of the canoes. He had mentioned that many of them would have undergone actual patch repairs and such though.

Does anyone have any kind of experience with buying used rentals? Are the discounts worth it usually or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one? Or search elsewhere for a used boat?

Thanks!

Another vote for the Olympus Tough series. I dont' take a lot of pictures when I'm out there, but you can't beat waterproof and shockproof. I can stand on my camera and it won't hurt it at all.

That being said, not a photo-buff so no idea on technicals of photography.
