Yes, it was cleared a few years ago and one of the portages was rerouted at that time (I think it was Raja to Muskrat?)

It's been a while since I was there so it's hard to recall exactly what size group it'd support, but as Bampot said, it's definitely on the smaller side. That I remember for sure. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a large group/a whole bunch of tents.

I've paddled a bit of that creek segment with GFromKitch - the upper end (west of the Gordon lake portage) and the bottom end (off of Rock Lake). It also appears as a route on an old map I have.

At the upper end we checked it out on a whim en route to Pinetree. It was quite wide so we were curious. We paddled it for a short distance with no issues but then go an obstruction (an old dam if I recall?) and so we turned around since we wanted to get to Pinetree. You'll want to watch out for the metal spikes in the water here.

Then afterwards we paddled quite a ways up from Rock. It was the end of our trip, so we weren't looking to see how far we could go, but like you guys were curious about whether it'd be plausible to paddle. Our impression was that it was likely viable.

So, ever since then I've had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to try it 'for real' =)

P.S. Thanks for this awesome trip report Bampot!!

The reason I removed that one from the newest edition of my map is because CN reached out. They wanted me to make it clear that they still own the railway right-of-way and the public is not permitted to use it. I've never heard of this being enforced, but I just thought I should mention that.

Hopefully someone else can answer your actual question. I've never paddled that in the spring and I don't want to speculate. Sounds like a fun trip though!

In my opinion this is unsafe for the French River, namely on Georgian Bay and the upper French/Lake Nipissing. There is nothing comparable in Algonquin. This will encourage people to travel when it is unsafe to do so.
As well, the MNR indicates that there are sites that don't actually exist. That was always ridiculous, but seems even more problematic with site-specific reservations.

Indeed!

The sites beside Kitty Lake Cabin are part of zone 225 (Farm Lake).

Those warnings on the FOAP website are not very accurate FYI.

The AFA accidentally ran heavy machinery through there and damaged the site.

Great info, thanks for chiming in Bob. I'll omit that note on the next revision of the map =)

I've never done that portage in the fall, but a few years ago AA's very own Bob & Diana McElroy had trouble getting through to the point that they had to turn around: https://mcelroy.ca/bushlog/20150909.html

That's why I added that note =)

Turns out we had a gathering on Jean island without even realizing it ;)

But yea, that was a lot of fun! I remember one of the times the ice had just gone out, and as me and Markus paddled down the lake a chunk of ice floated by lol

@Bo Knows - Great observation. That was intentional. The park changed the names, so I followed their lead. I think it'd be more confusing if my map contradicted their names.
