Thanks guys. What size of Excalibur do you have?

How's the Excalibur for dehydrating chili, stew, or other saucy dishes?

With the nesco, I had used additional fruit leather trays on the bottom-most racks to capture the liquids of the dishes. It worked well as these trays would end up as a leather of the sauce. Does the Excalibur have a similar arrangement that allows it to dehydrate such meals?

The unit we purchased did not come with solid racks or mats, so we had to buy a separate package of silicone dehydrator mats. Unfortunately, I haven't tried dehydrating saucy dishes yet, so I'm equally curious as to how that will turn out...

That'd definitely be a deal breaker for me to hear negative reviews on that front. The nesco was solid for a good ten years for me in that regard. The last customer service convo I had with them where I explained having replaced a Thermo resistor several times and their solution was a new power head kinda ticked me off

Curious if anyone has bought a dehydrator in the past few years with positive experiences.

My old Nesco crapped out on me -- it keeps blowing thermal fuses despite replacing. I've read less-than-optimistic reviews about newer Nesco models. The Excalibur dehydrators seem to have great reviews. There's also some others I've not heard of before such as Magic Mill.

I know some older dehydrators passed down from your grandma's grandma are probably alive and kicking... but I'm stuck buying in this modern market. Any insights are appreciated!

I think I run against the grain by wearing vasque hiking boots year round. I absolutely hate putting on wet footwear no matter the season, and unless it's a full day travel in consistent downpour they haven't yet wetted out on me. They have been good to me. Ankle stability and grip have been a non-issue. In the summer heat, I will rock barefoot around the campsite if I need to air out.

I would be curious to try these astrals though. I feel like my feet would feel naked in such a light shoe, but that's a me problem that I would have to overcome.

I can't seem to find exactly the one I'm looking for, but these seem reminiscent -- especially the first one.

NWO used to be reasonable -- charged us ~$20 to park there historically for a two night trip. Last year, they wanted $90 cash for a three night trip. A bit steep in my opinion. We just launched from the access point on K-mog. It's no secret that K-mog can be an angry lake. Keep an eye on the wind forecast and be prepared.

No experience targeting nor incidentally catching them, but I feel like there's a recent reg change regarding the ones in Ope. I think it may be due to find genetic uniqueness, if I'm phrasing that correctly, but not sure.

There was a cool fall canoe trip video of some guys smashing them. If I can dig up the link I'll post it. I wanna say there was something odd in their method, like that were using float rods typically used in Creek fishing but they were on lakes.

Funny, I thought to throw in the same guess.

Portages I underestimated largely due to circumstantial issues:
- Dickson to Round Island first half, we were already tired as heck from doing Shall to Animoosh the day before. That uphill grind was a slog.
- Cauliflower to York River in low water. I've done this section twice and the first time was a breeze albeit with some unmarked portages. The second time the ports were cleared but the water was so low that we were dragging canoes through loon shit and over rocks as early as Hay Cr.
- "Left fork" on the Wilkins cart trail to the 970m portage. For some reason I thought it'd be easier than portaging to the south tip. It wasn't. The 970m portage really felt like we were climbing up a dried overflow from Wilkins, with large river rock to trip over everywhere.

You can book five months from now and onwards so long as it's a contiguous set of dates.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

I was there last May and enjoyed the site quite a bit. Found an old barrel stove in the back 40, as well.
