Trip Reports » 4 Day Trip in August during the Fire Ban » 9/21/2018 1:12 pm

Hey everyone,

I recently decided to start blogging about my trips out there in the backcountry. I've completed my first one. If anyone is interested reading it, here's the link:

Hmm..I can only comment about changing your itinerary on the day you get your permit. This year I have changed my itinerary twice on the day of getting my permit even with a reservation. The only thing to note is that is must be done at the same access point.

I.E. You have a permit to access from Kearney and your change will still take you through the same office then you are okay.

However if you had a reservation to get your permit from Kearney but you showed up at Brent to change your itinerary, then you wouldn't be able to change it. You would have to cancel and rebook through the Brent office.

Wildlife » Bear Encounters? » 8/25/2018 10:18 pm

Last year when I went on a solo trip, I had a bear visit my campsite when I was about to fall asleep in my tent. The bear scrounged around the site to see if he or she could find anything and eventually came right up to my tent and sniffed around. I have to admit that I was a little nervous but I quickly reasoned with myself that I was not in harm's way. My food was properly hung and I had nothing of scent inside the tent with me.

As I calmed down, I held onto my knife just in case anything happened but alas, the bear decided to leave me alone. This just simply reinforced how important it is to keep a clean campsite and that bears generally aren't out to harass you.

Trip Planning » Meteor shower » 8/24/2018 11:01 am

I was out with a buddy on a 4 day trip during the peak days of the showers. We saw plenty of meteors late at night with some really impressive large ones that looked like fireballs exploding through the sky. It was the best display of showers I have ever seen. Not having the moon around completely helped with keeping the sky nice and dark

Most of the deer flies are gone at this point. The mosquitos aren't bad at all during the day but can be annoying on longer portages and during dusk and dawn. Applying DEET was enough to keep them at bay. Overall, I'd say its pretty good.

In regards to finding so many socks, I've often wondered if people leave them because they were wet and didn't want to have anything wet inside their dry bags. Regardless, it's really annoying.

I was in the park for 4 days over the past weekend. We had a thunder storm on Big Trout on Sunday night. Monday was overcast with some drizzle in the evening. Nothing crazy though.

Trip Planning » Kitty Lake Cabin » 8/09/2018 12:35 pm

My guess is that the ban applies. A friend of mine stayed in a cabin just outside the park boundary and they weren't allowed to use the indoor wood stove, much to their disappointment.

Trip Planning » Tim River/Rosebary in August. Passable? » 7/23/2018 10:29 am

Even though travelling the Tim River can be difficult and tedious at times, I have witnessed the most amount of wildlife doing that stretch than anywhere else in the park. That makes the adventure worth it for me. Another bonus is that Rosebary Lake has beach sites with nice sandy bottoms. It makes for excellent swimming.

Trip Planning » route feedback please. » 7/22/2018 1:47 pm

The portages in and of of Casey Lake are just long with a slow steady rise from Rain Lake and a slow steady decline from Casey to Daisy Lake. They are easy though and well travelled.

As for the stretch of the Tim River between Rosebary and Shah; I asked this same question to a tripper I encountered 2 weeks ago who had just travelled that section. He described it as being easy enough to navigate with "a few" beaver dams. This is pretty much what the Tim River is like between Tim Lake and Rosebary. We had to cross 5 dams to get to Rosebary 2 weeks ago.

Catch-all Discussions » Forest fires in APP - summer 2018 » 7/20/2018 8:44 pm

Oh boy.. I hope they can get those fires under control. There is supposed to be some rain on Monday which won't be enough to lift the ban but hopefully it helps with the firefighting efforts.

When we went to the west side of the park last weekend, we were told that some individuals were caught burning wood in the park during the ban :/

Hopefully the cause of these fires aren't camper related

Equipment » Securing vehicle keys » 7/16/2018 4:54 pm

I typically put my keys in a dry bag where my other electronics go. However last year I capsized in the water and accidentally left my car keys in my pocket. Needless to say they got completely submerged. Luckily when I returned to my car a day later, the keys were still operational. So either the water didn't damage the fob or having it dry off seemed to help.

Trip Planning » How are the bugs!? » 7/16/2018 4:50 pm

I just came back from camping in the area east of Rain Lake. The deer flies were around here and there but not too bad. At night we experienced a bad frenzy of mosquitos. Others I talked to after the trip either had some bad nights of mosquitos or nights where mosquitos weren't too bad. So I guess it just depends where you are. Either way, it's still a lot better than June

Trip Planning » Total Fire Ban for Backcountry effective July 10, 2018 » 7/10/2018 11:24 am

I never thought I would be hoping for rain as much as I am now. Heading to the park this weekend so it looks like it's time to bust out the battery operated lantern

I just returned from a 5 day trip on the west side of the park. We went as far as White Trout Lake and it looks like the colors up there are past peak. Most of the leaves have fallen and now the conifers are changing colors. As it has already been said, the trees have been stressed from all the heavy rainfall earlier this year.

It seems like the best area to see the colors is around the Rock Lake area. Its been hard to predict the change this year, thats for sure.

I just got back from that area today. I was on Louisa last night. I did the Rock-Pen-Welcome-Louisa loop. Hardly no color to be seen at all. Lots of leaf fall, but still LOTS of green in the canopy. Not a great year for leaf color that's for sure! The water is at it's warmest for the year right now too, still warm for swimming!

Thats true! We did a lot of swimming in our 5 day trip. I did forget to mention that the understory is still pretty green so there is definitely some more color to look forward to.

While I haven't been to the park in a couple of weeks, I'm hearing from people who live up around there that the colors are near peak. Its expected to be a busy weekend along Hwy 60 partly to do with not only the colors but also the fantastic weather.

I'm heading up there for a 5 day backcountry trip on Saturday. I can report back when arrive home.
