I think one of the other things you have to take into account is how many backcountry trips are with people from different households,     sure this wasn't an easy decision to make but at the end of the day probably the safest one for ALL the parks in the province of Ontario.     my son and I had a may 8th trip planned,  we are from 2 separate households so would have been cancelling anyways.      As I said to someone else this morning, the trout population in Algonquin will be getting a break from seeing lures toss their way this spring.      cheers and stay safe.

Sorry Ladies and Gentlemen,    the wife had relayed the message to me and its Parks Canada that is closed until June 1st.                 apologize for that.

My guess the Provincial Parks won't be far behind

Next time I will double check myself before posting,

Not really bartering but certainly was trading information,  we would be coming out of the south end of the Park , Big Porcupine area and would pass the next groups coming in,  sometimes passing 18 to 20 canoes in that time frame,   we would be peppering them to see who won what was usually the first round series of the Stanley cup playoffs and we would be passing them along all the info on what we caught and where we caught any fish that we did catch.       As someone said above the CANADIAN WAY.

Good afternoon,    just heard that the Provincial Parks will be closed to May 31st for now.     sounds like any reservations up to that time will be given back all money including booking fees.    said not to cancel any trips booked up to that date.          there goes spring lake trout fishing in the parks.

I have a fish cake recipe that calls for Poached fillets,   mostly use for Bass and Walleye but have used for Trout,  it was roughly for 5-7 mins in Boiling water,  I do season the water,    you could eat it like this or add to the fish cakes.

lots if different methods discuss, they all work,   something I learned this year was Bleeding a fish out as well,  cutting the tissue at the bottom of the head ( gill plate area) and let fish bleed out for roughly 20 mins.   you will have blood free fillets and makes cleaning a lot less messy.

From Kincardine and remember all to well pushing the boats across the ice and jumping in and also running them up on the ice and dragging to shore,   best fishing spot I ever fished.

Mike back in the day we use to fish the outflow of Bruce nuke and would always have to push our tinny that way over Baie du ore till we broke through we would wear our 5mm neoprene and you could kind of tell when the ice was going to break.

the one year I was carrying ice up to our camp from the canoe and setting on plastic we had sitting out ( campsite at Cradle Lake ) some guys where taking a short cut through our camp and asked what I was doing with all the ice, told them and they all said,   why didn't we think of that.     Funny as we always have our eyes peeled along the shorelines looking for the familar spots that had ice in previous years.

and in the spring there always is a Huge on on the Rocks as the south end of Big Porcupine,    I don't think anyone going in on the 11th ( if they get in ) will have any trouble finding Ice.

Kenny, I'd like to vote for your post to be the most helpful post of the year. One time we spent literally 6 hours looking for an apparent ice cave near Lows Lake in the Adirondacks, for the sole purpose of cold whiskey. We never found it and thought it was just a prank by the group before us, but apparently it exists. We will be camping on the South Shores....

We also use a Checklist of items to be taken and check off as we pack them.    I remember years ago Barry sharing his checklist with me and he had everything weighed and marked in Grams how much everything weighed.         I think every year we bring to much stuff but we eat healthy and sure we gain about 5 pounds ever year on our trips  and yes like a lot of People we have Steak the first night in.    as someone else mentioned we only drink High Test ( 40% )   around the fire at night.

We leave the Bourbon to after we are done fishing and have it around the fire.   The dosage has increased over the years as well,        we fish a lake that always has ice at about 4 different places along the shoreline so we always have ice for our drinks and to keep our food cold,    My job is to go get the ice while my son was gathering firewood,    we have our routine down to a Science once we arrive at our campsite.    He sets up the tent and all that gear,  I get the fishing stuff ready and off fishing within an hour of being in camp and then back around 5 and then the ice and firewood drill starts

you will find the ice along the south shores as it doesn't get as much sunlight at the north shores doe.

I recommend fishing with bourbon, near the shore. You'll never be disappointed. Happy fishing! Melt ice melt!

I think if you want to send a PM to someone to mentione it thats not a problem,  I have helped quite a few people over the years,   but I mainly give out what lures I was using and times of day etc. etc.  years ago with the surveys they where doing some lakes got a lot of pressure due to the previous years remarks on the surveys.     man hours spent catching fish etc. etc.       no different than a fishing forum I am on,    I will tell you the smallmouth bass fishing is good on the Maitland River from Wingham to Goderich,   about 20 +  km of river to cover.

We have our best luck trolling , ( covering water )   we use a lot of the Blue Fox spinners,  the standard  EGB'S and if we get on a hot bite ( that usually occurs when a bug hatch starts,  we jig for them.

we tend to fish a lot of lures with some Blue on them.........has worked for us over the years.

think you are right on the push back date,   don't even think most lakes will be even open.   Just not enough nightime high temps right now to help the cause.

i would like to be in the park for the long week, things could shape up as you suggested,
however,, may 18th is my parents 74th wedding anniversary, dad 96 and mom 92
i will be home for that wild party!

first the ice goes out, then the roads will be fixed up, then the trails,
the ice storm probably created many new blow downs along the trails in algonquin park. i fully expect that  another opening date will be announced pushing things back another week. just a guess,

Tim Lake should be an option for you as well,  no portaging and you can rent canoes and have dropped off if needed,    that way if you need more booze it's just a paddle back to the vehicles.

A Straight Line from Midland west to Tobermory is   Water.     you can drive from 17 south to get to Tobermory but if coming from south only access is  the Ferry.   if you are coming from Ottawa area my guess is you'll be bringing 17 across.

Yes very good story and brought back a lot of memories from my first trip to the Park 35+ ago,  Rained for 7 days, no dry clothes to speak of  and fun finding dry wood,    and we did run into to Ladies from the states with their Brothers Grumman 17' freighter canoe,   met up with 2 guys who met them at the bottom of the Ragged to Big Porc Portage and of course they offered to carry the canoe for the Ladies,  guys said their knees buckled when they picked it up.      we also saw a Group of about 10  people, ( early 20's) across from us jumping in and out of the water most of the day,     then later canoed over to our campsite to borrow a lighter or matched,   they had 1 lighter between all of them,    think we had 10 lighters and matches.       when we canoed out after 7 days of rain we canoed over top of the docks at Smoke Lake, they had been sitting out of the water by at least 8"  when we put in.
