I bought a small bear barrel from REI last year for my backpacking trips. It fits into my pack and gets left on the ground in camp.

I wear Asolo TP520 hiking boots (see my review at www.OutsidewithClyde.com) and have never hurt my ankles. I also wear orthotic inserts which help with stability and lace them up snug before a portage. Turned (sprained) ankles take time to heal like any joint injury. Have you considered a mild wrap of the ankles with athletic tape? This was a technique I used when I was speedskating competitively. It does not take much to provide extra support and stability. A Google search will show you basic technique.

I plan for 3000 to 3500 calories per day per person depending on the expected distances to cover each day. This usually means freeze-dried dinners (Mountain House or Backpackers Pantry) are 2 servings per person. I stick to 1 serving per person for the freeze-dried desserts. Rarely do I use these prepackaged meals for lunches but stick with nuts, dried meats, dried fruits, Clif bars, etc. Breakfasts are a mix of instant oatmeal with added fruit and nuts or breakfast burritos using the freeze-dried egg options. The odd fish supplements lunches and dinners. Given all these options I stick with the 3000-3500 caloric content per day. This has worked well for me especially when trying to keep the pack weight as minimal as possible.

I had a glorious solo trip this May traveling counterclockwise from Cedar Lake upstream on the Petawawa River, downstream on the Little Madawaska and returning to Cedar Lake with 100 km traveled and 15 km of portages. It will be several weeks to produce all of the video I captured but I did find time to write this video blog of a special find on the Little Madawaska River. I hope you enjoy it.

I had an awesome trip covering my planned route (100 km / 15km portages) in 6 days. Lots of wind made it hard to fish and plenty of headwinds on the first 1/2 of the trip. Fishing was slow for me and as reported by other fishermen I encountered. However, I was more focused on paddling and capturing the scenery. Weather was really amazing for early May and had only a few mosquitoes and black flies but nothing biting.

What days were you in the Park? I did a 6-day loop May 12 to 18 through Cedar Lake and the fishing was very slow.

For those following this thread and interested in the Brent access point: I just got my permit to start from Cedar Lake! My route crosses Cedar to the Petawawa. Apparently only the western section of Cedar has ice. Can’t comment on Brent Road as I’m leaving the permit office now by Hwy 17. Good luck to everyone this week. Paddle On...

I appreciate the posts regarding Brent Road and Cedar Lake. I have a 7-night solo trip planned to start from there on Saturday. The access road is less of a concern since my Grand Cherokee has the upgraded adventure II off-road package. I am not so confident Scott Kevlar canoe is capable of breaking ice!

I own and recommend the REI Quarter Dome 2 Plus tent and am extremely happy with both the roominess and performance. It is reasonably priced and has received excellent ratings by various outdoor magazines and orgs.

This was my maiden journey into Algonquin Park in 1990. My 4-year-old son and I ventured through Magnetewan Lake and camped on the island on Daisy Lake. It was also our first back country canoe experience. I hope you enjoy the story and the pictures.

This is my maiden trip into Algonquin Park in 1990 with my 4-year-old son Drew. It was our first back country canoe trip. We accessed the park through Magnetewan Lake and spent a couple nights on Daisy Lake. Hope you enjoy the story and pictures.

We have used Canoe Algonquin for years and recommend them. I also think they have started adding Swift canoes to their fleet since Scott Canoe is no longer in business.
