Guaranteed The whole East end will follow suite today.  (lower elevation)

Lake Nipissing in North Bay is Ice free at least a couple of KM out from town. Nipissing always sheds a week later than APP so thats a good sign. After today's sunshine there wont be much left. ;-)

FOAP mentioned that Park lake was ice free on the western side as well? Can anyone tell me where on the western side that is? Curious what Ralph bice is like, and what that access point will be like come this Friday.

Park lake is the one you pass on 60 just before you hit the west gate coming from Huntsville.

I'm sure this has already been posted but you can keep an eye on things here as long as it's not too cloudy.  https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?p=geographic&l=VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor,Reference_Labels(hidden),Reference_Features(hidden),Coastlines&t=2019-05-05-T00%3A00%3A00Z&z=3&v=-80.15102131683925,44.8909047504353,-76.98695881683925,46.7080434223103

I just left Mew lake this morning and LOTR was 60-80% ice covered albeit starting to darken up. Same goes for Opeongo as seen from the dock. One or two more days should take care of remaining ice. I hope  .

The flyover is scheduled for tomorrow to assess the remaining ice conditions.

Just visited the FOAP site and saw that they have defined some access points as opening on May 10 and others as TBD. I was hoping to do a stint on the Western Uplands Trail this weekend and am now getting very concerned with the 'TBD' designation....

I think the plane saw how much ice is left, and headed south.

sat images from today are not promising for opening all of the interior this weekend.

here's hoping a partial opening??? fingers crossed

Does anyone know if you are allowed to portage to lakes on a day trip if the 'backcountry' is closed? Could one stay at Mew lake campground and go canoeing/fishing on day trips to surrounding lakes even if it takes a portage or two to get there?

Today's sat pictures clearly show a lot of lakes including Opeongo still being ice covered. Assuming they stick with an 'all or none' backcountry opening as they have in recent years then there probably won't be any permits until at least Monday.

Also based on history, yes you should be able to day trip on lakes with open water but it's always a good idea to confirm when you get to the park.

Id put $ on you being okay for the 15th. I think ice out will be Sunday/Monday - permits issued Tuesday.

After the wind and rain tomorrow and warm temps Saturday/Sunday you will definitely be fine for the 15th.

Geez in 18 years I don't think I've ever seen Lake Nippissing ice out this long before Algonquin...crazy

This is really unfortunate - I really need a spring outing and this is my only chance. I'll see if I can scare something up for a backpacking trip in Killarney but not very hopeful. Currently on perma hold for the next operator....
