Craig and Charr lake

I'm looking at these lakes for a shorter trip. There aren't any recent trip logs, but maybe people have gone there for weekends or so. We would be accessing from the alternative access point near Nahma lake. I'm wondering if the portages are easy? Are they steep or rooty, etc? We are 2 ladies, and one of us is almost 70. Although in reasonable shape ( we think), we will be double carrying the portages.
Does anyone have helpful information or pictures from campsites, portages etc? Are these lakes busy? Our time frame would be early September, after long weekend.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Craig and Charr lake

Hey tentster,

I've been through this area a few times and it's a great spot for a quick getaway. The portages are all easy and flat (except the 865m portage from Craig to Pishnecka, use the shorter one if water levels permit). I don't recall them being rocky or rooty, just typical trails through the forest.

Regarding camping: Craig Lake is nice but the huge concrete dam on the north shore is visible from most campsites and really take away from the feel - you're better off holding back at Nahma, or pushing on to Pishnecka. I wouldn't go as far as Charr due to Pishnecka being a much more picturesque lake and features better campsites (One is a big rock the other is a nice beach).

Regarding access: There is a small parking lot on the north side of the south river - but save yourself the trouble, drive over the bridge and look on your left - there is a small clearing to park your car and a trail from here directly to the first unnamed pond. Starting here saves you the hassle of loading into the south river for a 30m paddle to a portage leading to the same unnamed pond. See below for details:

You can park where the little car is and take this alternate portage. That section of the south river is shallow and rocky anyway, this is the better option.
