Opening May 1st - Road to Travers

I've watched the discussions from the sidelines over the years of those with trips planned for immediately around ice-out but I now find myself in that group - I've got a reservation May 1st out of Lake Travers and the park has identified the road is impassable due to washouts but scheduled to open by May 1st.

How long of a lead time have they given in the past to road status or further delays?  We've got a nine or ten hour drive so we'll make hotel reservations...but I don't want to reserve a hotel until I know we can get in the park from the east side.  I was secretly hoping that they'd post something by the end of the day Monday but it's been quiet since they announced the delayed May 1st openings a couple weeks ago.  Am I just too eager and impatient (I expect that's the real issue!)

Ugh. That's a tough one. Sometimes, if you can get a live person at the west gate, you can get some intel on where the crews are working. Of course, it can depend on the nature/scale of the work that needs to be done. I see Cedar is similarly delayed but a date has been suggested for re-opening. We are going into the NW corner of the Park May 1 and there are no issues. There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to the lead time around when access may be permitted or announced beyond checking the Alerts page every morning. At this stage, and I'm sure you are, I would be looking at Plan B to make sure you'll get on the water May 1. I expect you will put in somewhere.. I hope you have a great trip, Joe.

Ya I'm going to the grand access and the road is also closed. I am not too optimistic that it will be open by this weekend with the monsoon we have coming.

Re: Opening May 1st - Road to Travers

I'm watching, waiting, hoping for the all clear, but.....I just read two conflicting things.  One is that the Rock Lake access road is basically gravel/washboard, the typical kind of road, and elsewhere I saw that road would require 4WD because it is in pretty nasty shape.   It is so difficult to get a good read on this stuff.

Rock Lake needing 4WD drive must be a seasonal thing. The road is a wide smooth (as can be for a dirt road) road. I have driven it in a Honda Fit many times.

The Barron Canyon road, although the same type of road, can get nasty. There are some low parts (like just before the McManus road) that are at the same height as the surrounding swampy/ponds, and some big hills that get really chewed up this time of year. However, when its in good shape its fine. The drier the road is the better for sure, or when it is frozen.

Re: Opening May 1st - Road to Travers

Every bad washout I've seen on that road is at the private road on the right about halfway down, I suspect the trucks rut it when they turn while it's still soft in early spring, pushing up a small berm that forces the flow of melt water across the road, washing it away and leaving a fairly substantial ditch running from NE to SW. 4WD isn't always necessary but high clearance can be. As soon as it firms up it's filled and graded every year before the first influx of campers.
Some times you get the same at the Coon Lake road, for the same reason, but in this case it's far less washed out because it's basically only Ministry trucks prepping Coon for opening...

Scoutergriz, is that private road the one before you enter the park, where there is a cabin that appears to be on an island in the middle of a swamp on the north side of the road? Just before the "shooting range".

I see that, Fred!  Just getting some shuteye in Petawawa before heading in in the morning.  Gotta hand it to the park maintenance team - that’s a lot of roads and facilities to cover and they got a bunch of them clear.

no, halfway down Rock Lake Road there's posted road on a hill that cuts off to the right- I don't know where exactly where it goes because it's private, but you often see logging trucks using it
