Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

9 degrees overnight tonight and a total of about 15mm of rain predicted between tonight and the morning in the park? Ice out may be close now.

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

AO reported 18" of ice on Source Lake today. That sounds depressing.

Where did you see that? That is VERY depressing.

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

I saw the same on Twitter, just after I booked my first trip starting April 29th. Booooo.

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

Ok, much as I said it is depressing, don't get too depressed. I also heard that ice on Opeongo when from 20" to 10" in the last week. It varies from place to place. 10" of ice can candle and get washed out within a day or 2. Or it can freeze right up again like it did at the end of March Break when the ice on our lake went from being down to 4" of ice and starting to candle on the Friday to a good 8" - 10" of solid ice by the Sunday morning. Of course there aren't any -16C nights forecast in the next week.

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

Does anyone else feel like they're watching paint dry? This has got to be one of the all-time nerdiest threads that ever existed on any forum anywhere on the web! But hey, I'm just as big a geek as the next ice-out watcher. I keep coming back to see what the latest post is (2 or 3 times a day) and I was bummed to discover yesterday's Modis images are clouded over! And when the heck is FOAP going to update the ice-out page with new pics showing something actually happening???

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

We had plans for Algonquin but changed them to Kawartha (Algonquin - lite) when we knew ice out wasn't going to happen. Finalizing  packing as we leave this am.
Excited to get my fix after 6 long months!

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

Jerk!

But good idea. I have a 5-day trip booked in Algonquin starting on the 29th. If the ice doesn't cooperate maybe I'll head to the Kawartha Highlands myself.

Re: Are predictions for ice-out starting yet?

If you look at fork lake on the Algonquin webcam, there's a wide open channel right down the middle today!

Getting a permit for ice free areas will be the big question...I think there is a good possibility you will see somewhat smaller access lakes like smoke and canoe go out in the next 3-4 days...but Opeongo, maybe not till next weekend or so. So say Canoe is clear on Tuesday...but Opeongo still is blocked by ice up to Happy Isle etc, do they open up Canoe and Smoke? Same as the Magnettawan/Rain lake area, Sec as mentioned above. In years past we would change destinations according to ice conditions if need be. Most people cannot change days off this close to their trip, but you would change lakes accordingly. So we wait and see. But hey, if all lakes are still ice covered till next weekend, moot point.
