(Insects, silent spring) Hawk moth?

I read somewhere about some U.S. researchers who were worried about the hawk moth. That so? If you don't know them they are just the weirdest thing - you might mistake one for a hummingbird.

I found this little guy (link to larger image, 2,000+ pixels) on the sidewalk in Toronto just now. Only a couple of inches long (but bigger than a Wooly Bear) with stubby feet like a NASA moon buggy or lander.
 
I'm amazed that my cell phone camera was able to resolve the little nodules and even the hair!
