Ya Justin does good gear reviews. They have since improved the filter since this video Barry.
It comes with a quick connect cap that allows for attachment to other size bottle threads and to use the filter in a gravity system. See video.

Solo I use a Platypus Quickdraw filter and 3L CNOC bag. Weighs 6 ozs or 10ozs less than a mini works. It’s fast and I have never had a clog. (used the befree before this and moved over because of clogging)
Don’t think you could go wrong with a Sawyer filter either like the Sawyer Squeeze. Been around forever. People swear by them.

Hey Andy.
I own the Neo loft. It is the most comfortable thermarest pad I own by a fair margin and likely the most comfortable overall. The heaviest too but it isn’t that bad considering how big it is. No hip pain steeping on it.
Also have from thermarest.

Hey Barry.
I support geartrade.ca for a lot of my ultralight purchases now.
A lot of people use Quilts in summer and these guys carry many of the top ultralight versions. They aren’t cheap but no decent ultralight gear is.
Personally I use a zpacks classic 30 degree bag in summer now. 14 ozs.
| Equipment » Rogers Satellite Beta » 7/22/2025 10:24 am |
So they accepted me I’m on the beta. Won’t be on a trip for a bit but will try it out.
A few more things I have learned.
Need to be on a newer device. iPhone 13 or newer or a newer Samsung etc.
If you are a Rogers customer and on an Ultimate plan it will be included in the plan after the beta at no additional cost.
If you need to pay for it …$10/mth for the first 12 months 15/mth after that.
You will be able to cancel and re-add the feature at anytime if you are paying for it.
I looked at the coverage map. All of APP is covered. Plan on hiking the Pukaskwa Coastal trail in Sept .. it is all covered. Most places in Ontario even further North look covered. Wabakimi , Woodland Caribou etc all covered.
I think it’s just texting no data for now. . So looking at your weather network app won’t work. You would need someone to send you a forecast for the area you are in.
“ the service will expand to picture messaging, data, and even voice calls down the road.”
I will add part of me isn’t happy for its arrival. I like the disconnect but as someone who has had emergencies in the backcountry and have family members with health issues the pros out weigh the cons.
Can we all agree now to treat it like a movie theatre though ? All phones on silent mode please. 🙏

Looks interesting. I retired from Rogers over 2 years ago otherwise I would have likely been involved in the launch but as it stands I don't know much. I just signed up for the beta.
It is free until the end of Oct. and looks like you don't need to be a Rogers mobile customer to join.
$10/mth after that for the first 12 months. Will try it out and see if it is worth it yet. Eventually this will spell the end of Inreach etc..Not sure if we are there yet though.

There might be more bad news to come. This is Bates Island
Every location would be a bit different I think. I would be out of my tent for sure. Can’t avoid what you can’t see and the tent offers zero protection. In that kind of wind a canoe isn’t going to do you any good either. I was in a storm once no where close to what happened here and the wind threw my canoe 30 ft. If there was an open area I would head there.. even better if that area is low lying. Flying debris branches etc will be one of your main risks. Get low or lie flat. Cover my head and neck with a well filled pack for protection.
If there are no open areas but if the site had a beach or a shoreline that didn’t drop off quickly I might wander out there away from the trees with my PFD on and get low and ride it out.
Oh..and crap my pants. That step would be very important.

Going to just stretch my legs with a hike around Provoking on Tues and then I’m in at Brent on May 14. Catfish>Plumb>Whiskey Jack> Long Marsh.
| Trip Planning » Are we thawed yet?!? 2025 Ice Out » 4/08/2025 4:27 pm |
I live near kempenfelt bay.
It’s never exact but usually pretty close that AP ice out is 3 weeks behind ice out on Kempenfelt. Ice is still in and I think AP might be closer to 4 weeks behind this year with the added ice thickness in AP.
I’m guessing the second weekend in May is the best we can hope for.

Geez. Not sure but it looks pretty beaten down. That’s the problem with people showcasing these gem sites. 😉

Ya Bruce Smith makes some nice paddles. I custom ordered a couple from him over a decade ago.
Could be wrong but pretty sure he is hanging it up though and retiring.
