For light packable sleeping bags I’d recommend:
Little Shop of Hammock Quilts
Sea to Summit Ultralight sleeping bag line
MEC ultralight line (if on a budget)
For water filtration both Steripens and BeFree water filters are pretty light options

Barry if you posted a current gear list it would help people make suggestions that are relevant.
Ultralight can be a pretty big range so knowing what you use now would allow comparable ultralight suggestions

Trip Reports » Smoke to Ragged » 10/26/2025 5:33 pm
Did a quick one night into Ragged. 5 boats. 6 women. Some of the group went in for 2 nights and saw two moose. We saw two loons turning grey which was cool. Most of the leaves were gone. Super quiet with low wind. Quite lovely.

I actually just killed my original inReach and bought a mini. I won’t be cancelling it to save 25$ a month for awhile. It isn’t just the battery life I value. It’s also that the device is pretty hardy and it’s independent of the phone. I’m sure eventually I’ll switch over but definitely not yet.
Backcountry » What’s your bucket list trip? » 3/28/2025 6:06 pm
My bucket list trip is a year in Algonquin Park.
I don’t see anyone having an issue with US citizens being here unless they are talking nonsense about things like annexing Canada. I’m assuming anyone who has spent time in Canada doesn’t plan on coming up here to be rude. So come for sure. Canada is pretty peaceful. For the record I live on the border and there are rumours that Canadians should not go to Michigan because Canadian cars tires are being slashed.

I have a carbon Osprey so no plans for a new boat but Swift has aces new boats. I’d go try them out in the spring.

I have 10 days planned in Pukasawa this year. Algonquin hiking is too competitive for my booking style.

Hi Shane - Sorry I just haven’t been on a lot. I’ve decided to take it down for now as the boat I was looking at to replace it just isn’t going to cut it yet.

Just curious if anyone has an opinion on how this compares to previous Ostrum small packs?
Trip Planning » Camps hoarding prime campsites on popular lakes all summer » 8/12/2023 2:28 pm
I am pretty sure this isn’t legal, even with a permit. I have always had good experiences with the camps. You might try calling the camp to ask for clarification of if this is an official policy or if some counsellor a have gone rogue on this. I wouldn’t be surprised if the camps are pushing for reservation by site as they could reserve the full summer on all the sites they want and never have to share again 🤷🏻♀️
Trip Planning » Lake Opeongo - solo? » 7/31/2023 9:42 am
This has been an interesting read. I never give people advice on which side if a lake to paddle on because skill level is such a big factor. On one side conditions are typically better but consequences if you end up in the water are high. On the other it’s the reverse. That risk analysis is a really personal decision.
As for the question of risk on Opeongo. It’s true shoulder seasons are the most concerning. It has had a number of deaths. I was leaving the park as the dive team came in for one of the incidents a decade or so ago and I read Krista’s husband’s account of supporting the rescue in another. So I think it’s a lake with enough risk to take it seriously 🤷🏻♀️
