I actually just met someone who had this chair on the weekend.  They love it. Folds down into a little bag.  They got theirs on Amazon for about 150

Saw it last year at Kiosk also. I don't understand how someone could undertake such a trip and not at least watch a couple of youtube videos or something just to get a feel for what they're likely to encounter

First thing should learn how to do is paddle a canoe so they aren't zig zagging across the lake.  Path of the Paddle should be a prerequisite watch for any newbie. Then once they are decent enough at paddling learn the basics of backcountry camping.

It's not something that should be learnt on the fly unless you are with experienced people.

Kiosk was busy last weekend but it was to be expected given the long weekend. We arrived early on the Thursday to get a head start on the masses and secured some primo parking.
Newbies? Oh yeah. Thurs night we had some backcountry campers on their first trip ever paddle by our camp at 10:30pm in the dark trying to get a site with no flashlight. We ended up letting them stay at our site which, if it didn't help save their lives, most certainly saved their relationship.
Something to hang our food? No, why?
Oh dear...

Wow that is scary.  It never ceases to amaze me how unprepared and un-skilled some folks are when heading out into the backcountry.
We had a similar scenario last year with some young boys, although it wasn't quiet dark yet.  Needless to say the didn't make it to their planned lake and they ended up camping on the portage across from our site.

Heading up to Potter next week for a 2 night'er.  I was just curious as to how busy the park has been so far.  Last year Canoe lake was nuts and finding parking was a real chore. I expect it to be similar this year coming out of another "lock down".  Will there be more newbies? lol

Okay, I paddled all over Dickson Lake looking at campsites. Here's my opinion:

Dickson campsites are basically all crap. While it was nice to be able to finally camp there, in the future I'll be going back to Lavieille rather than staying on Dickson.

Although I only stayed there once many years ago, I thought the Island site in Cisco Bay was nice.  That also could be because it was April and 20c and we were catching tons of fish lol.

So it appears I got an actual non-form letter reply from Jeff Turek about an idea to help combat site scalping.

Dear Brandon,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this idea, I will review and discuss it with my policy team at the ministry.

Thanks again and take good care,

Who is the best or you go to camping supply store?  I am familiar with the Last Hunt, but wondered what else is out there.

Thanks

The chief medical officer and other health units along with Childrens mental health are the ones calling for the kids to go back to school.  We are in a children's mental health crisis (e.g. CHEO here in Ottawa said they are up well over 200% increase over last year for mental health services) and its for that reason that they want them back in class ... agreed that the month of June usually carries the least amount of work but the benefit of having kids together again is huge .. even for a few weeks.

It’s a very difficult balance, mental health vs increased covid. My kids are handling things very well but I know of other families that are not. Most teachers have a first shot now and covid is shown not to hit most kids with heavy symptoms. Grade 9 and up are not even in school full time anyway and K-8 are limited to their own class and very limited in the amount of close contact they can get but I understand how just presence at school could be a boon to younger minds. If I had vote, keep them closed until September. We’re on the verge of a very real reopening by end of June if we stay the course and there would be so many more benefits to that opposed to a few days of distanced classroom time that could push that reopening further into the future.

Being the parent of a JK student and an only the child I can say the lack of socializing at school has definitely had a negative impact on her.  Not only is there the mental health aspect of it but many kids are behind in their learning and may have to repeat a grade.  Neither of those things seem worth it in the long run.

I'm all for them going back to school and was totally against them staying home the second time.  Especially for the younger kids.

Hi All,
Was thinking of doing a late Sept trip to Little Island with the wife but couldn't find any site info on the PCI page.  Does anyone have an experience on this lake they could share?

Thanks in advance!

I used the Google and found a MarkinthePark report lol. Would still appreciate feedback though.

Maybe what they should do is make the booking person list a secondary permit holder or Alternate incase they have to back out.  It would naturally have to be someone going on the trip and remove the need to make a "transfer".

This is by far one of the better ideas. It is still not perfect as the person booking that particular trip doesn't necessarily know who exactly will be on the trip. Have you ever tried to book a buddies trip? Started with your regulars, most say 'for sure' they will be there again, then life happens and the roster changes repeatedly up to the week before when the most dedicated person - the one who booked the permit in the first place - has that unexpected event happen - health, family, work, whatever - and can't make it but now there are 5 other people who are committed and packed and can't change their vacation days on that short notice?

Something needs to be done about scalpers, but so far the suggested cures seem to be almost as bad as the problem.

I only go with 1 buddy so it's pretty straight forward.  But I hear what your are saying, the phrase "herding cats" comes to mind lol
