I’m looking at picking up a kayak paddle and play/practice solo canoeing over the next season with the kayak paddle.  Read some reviews and gather the longer the better from a reach perspective. For now I’ll be paddling in my swift prospector 16. Any of you experienced kayak paddle canoers have a recommendation on length or comments on a bent shaft kayak paddle and length recommendation ?

For the fire I’ve found that a pair of welding gloves are awesome. You can grab and move wood in the fire, spread coals nicely to make a bed of coals easily etc. Cheap and fire proof.

Tripper mike. Curious...Was that June 1st you were wind trapped on maple creek?  My 2 kids and I were also trapped by wind top of maple coming back to kiosk on Sunday June 1st. Crazy white caps and wind. Too unsafe to paddle. So one more night and overnight the temp dropped and it was sleet/snow/rain at 6am the next morning. Miserable morning.  curse of winds out of kiosk proved themselves that weekend!

Been doing a lot of reading lately on the meanest link. It seems most do it clockwise. If you are doing it section by section why would folks not do it Brent to Huntsville versus Huntsville to Brent and take advantage of going with the current on the big east river portion?

I can vouch for the Garmin In Reach Mini- i had asked the forum earlier this year about recommendations and ended up purchasing one myself. great device and i did have to use the two way to let my wife know we were stuck an extra day due to high winds out of Kiosk on our May trip. High winds, Kiosk, who would have thought eh?

Oh i'm well aware of the lack of success of the official program!  and we've seen that wolf presentation once every couple of years. it would just be neat to be a part of the full deal should it every happen. we've heard them in the past on a couple of backcountry trips with my older two, but never the younger kids. thanks for the Basin Lake suggestion. the east side of the park is not something we've explored a lot as we're coming in from the west side always. but it's on the list. are those roads you see on the maps actually accessible alongside basin lake, travers and the observatory- can you actually drive up those?

If you are NOT in the park during the week- does anyone know best way to find out if an actual wolf howl will be happening on any given Thursday in August. would like to monitor if one in fact ends up happening on a Thursday and if it's going to happen then make the trip in to be part of it. since it's so rare!

My eldest son has decided to join us for a 3 day ice out trip May 3rd if the stars align themselves. he's a kayaker though. has a spray skirt, but any recommendations for lower body clothing for warmth and water proofing other than standard rain pants, thermal long johns, neoprene socks, etc. what about neoprene chest waders stocking feet?

canoeing wise we're always fine at ice out and actually have used hip waders very successfully in cold water stuff, but that wouldn't be great for in/out of the kayak.
