Jealous.
Very jealous.
Take care coming out of the Otterslides, I've often seen soloists bobbing around trying to get out of that bay as the prevailing winds usually blow right down there.
Other than that, everyone's suggestions are spot on. Depending on your needs, I liked PCI site #9 on Little Otterslide as a supremely protected site with lots of firewood on-site. Not much to look at but it's out of every breath of wind.
Same goes for site #24 on Big trout. Nice, pretty, stuff to explore, out of the wind and waves.
There's no bad sites on McIntosh.
God, I want to go on that trip. But my wife is very pregnant with my 2nd kid/future-portage-mule and would kill me in very public and celebrated manner if I went out of cell range. Maybe if I tell her I'll take the 3yr old...

Oh, okay. Yeah the website I looked at didn't show that there's an un-insulated version and an insulated one.
Looks like Klymit does make one's with significant R-value too. If you like the way it sleeps this one would be similar, but stuffed: Product · Gathr (gathroutdoors.com)
Their whole line is offered in "insulated" with different material weights and designs.

Your sleeping pad has foam in it, which is what makes them "self-inflate," so you've already got some foam in there. Maybe try shopping around for a sleeping pad with a higher R-value. The R-value is a division of the thickness by thermal conductivity, so the higher the number the more it insulates.
From what I see the Klymit V only has a R-value of 1.3. The MEC Reactor is significantly heavier, but has 4x the insulation. A quick search shows that it would be a higher R-value than both the foam and Klymit together. Might be worth a look.

Hi folks,
Where's this pretty rainbow?

This one is getting tough. I'm gonna guess Minnow Lake.
Haven't been there myself but here's my reasoning:
-Opposite side of the park from Reed
-Black lines to get there
-If I squint the topography matches Jeff's map
-2nd last before a dead end
I'm going crosseyed trying to figure this out!
Trip Planning » Lake Opeongo - solo? » 7/10/2023 9:26 am |
Ope is the most dangerous when it's cold, but the wind can be heck. If it's where you're gunning for it'll be fine as long as you stay calm and safe. From what I've seen in your posts there's nothing there that would a hinderance. Bates island is nice, but haunted.
As others are saying, Ope is not a great overnight destination for a plethora of reasons. I love Cache and Source/Canisbay lake as a starting point from Hwy 60. Longer, but easy, portages keep away the more destructive campers that frequent Ope and the Joe lakes but keep travel times to quality sites to less than 2hrs over calm waters (vs Canoe/Smoke/Rock). If I just have a night and I'm on 60, that's where I start trip planning.
