You’ll find some nice beach front sites on North Tea and Manitou.  Trees are a mixed bag of coniferous and deciduous.

Dave, I just cancelled a front country trip this weekend due to the inclement weather forecast, first time I've ever had to cancel a trip entirely.

25mm rain Saturday and -4C overnight Sunday with 2 kids under 4 doesn't seem like a great time.  Oh well, 2 more weeks until my first back country trip.

As an example even though my Lab is very cold tolerant (she actually enjoys walking in belly deep ice water full of slush at the cottage in March), taking her on our spring trip last week meant packing 2 extra fleece sleeping bag liners just for her.

I have a husky/lab/Manitoba special and it's the same way.  She will be swimming in Lake Ontario in December, but on a windy trip in mid October she needs a wool blanket and a little fleece jacket for the night.

I could be wrong, but I think this went into effect when ONparks revamped their reservation system (aka same year you could no longer see available sites without Site Scout).

Thanks all.  I don't go until the first weekend in June, which will no doubt be worse than this weekend lol.

I'll be just North of 17 the first week of June, hopefully I don't get carried away.

I trip solo, with friends who have their own gear, with friends who don’t have much gear, and with a family of four (2 kids under 4), and almost always with a 60lb dog.

Pack out can vary in many ways.  I usually create a list based on each individual trip depending on time of year, potential weather, length of trip and obviously who is coming with me.  Then I’ll lay everything out in the basement from the gear closet and start ticking boxes.

If I’m going solo, I’m more likely to forget the tent poles than if I’m packing for a group, although I once forgot a tent entirely….

A few friends were up on the weekend, not sure if they were in Algonquin or not, but they said the black flies were out but not biting just yet.
Based on the forecast, they'll be nibbling this weekend.

Looks like they're reopening just outside of the park.  Anyone more local able to let us know where they are specifically?  I'm always happy to browse new/or different stores, and I'm in the market for a new canoe.

They are operating under The Portage Outpost now.  They’ve got a canoe sale by appointment only coming up in a few weeks.

Sunbeam Loop kinda interests me. As much as I dislike  leaving outta Canoe Lake it does have that classic Algonquin  vibe. Also with the history  in the area there is some cool things to see.  I've never been to the cemetery  at Mowat so this might be the ticket with some points of interest  to take in as well. Looking forward  to more ideas.

If you can leave on a Tuesday/Wednesday it won’t be as hectic at Canoe.

You could head up Potters creek through the old town, Brule has a nice cliff site.

Then head up to Misty/Timberwolf/Mcintosh area.  Last night camp on Tom Thomson or another lake in the area.  Not too much travel, flat portages, lots of history etc.  You would have lots of time to go visit the cemetery on your way in or out.

Louisa loop is a classic 2-3 nighter and a staple area of the park.  To me, that’s the definition of a great first timers trip.

Sunbeam loop.

Harness loop, although lots of portaging.

Ragged/Parkside bay loop.

Maple/Erables loop out of Kiosk.

Manitou loop out of Kiosk.

Little trout /queer/Bice loop

Or some out and backs like a tour of North Tea, Rosebary and Tim lake area, a Daisy/Misty/Daisy type trip.

It all depends on your friends interest in travel times.  If they aren’t a regular paddler, I’d keep the days around 12km max.

My first visit isn't until May 19 with my two boys, but thrilling to know she's open!  Stay safe and dry out there folks.

There is a narrow time band between "Ice Out" and "Bug In".  I've got a reservation that starts on 5/13....hoping I'm within that narrow time band....but not counting on it, I'll be prepared.  Prepared with gear, prepared to whine (because everybody loves a whiner).

I didn't notice an "Ice Out" guessing contest this year (wasn't looking), but to me "Bug In", while less empirical, is the more important of the two, and could probably afford more entertaining contests.

Last year around the second week of May, we were hit with an unseasonable heat wave which brought the black flies out a bit early.  Nothing some spray, a bug shirt and some mental tolerance couldn't handle though.
