Trip Planning » Portage Campsite Inventory » 5/02/2023 7:16 am |
Between this website's PCI and the parallel/integrated efforts of Drew ('All of Algonquin' website) and Cody ('Algonquin and Beyond' website), we have a growing online resource of backcountry campsites. This post is a reminder to those planning a backcountry trip to remember this resource .. both as a tool in your planning .. and as an opportunity to provide additional information to our general community. By checking out the PCI, you can identify opportunities to add reports of campsites that are not yet documented. Reports can be either emailed to the PCI through http://www.algonquinadventures.com/PCI/PCIindex.htm or submitted to Cody's website at https://algonquinbeyond.com/algonquin-campsites-submit/
I've just completed adding links to the PCI of the latest campsite reports from both Drew's and Cody's websites and encourage you to consider adding new campsite reports to our collective effort.

Those forested rounded hills at sunset! Remind me of several lakes. I'll start with the south end of Pen Lake.

I'm with Kokko on that guess. Looks like fall colours and low water!

Hi Barry,
When I load the front page, the latest update I see is April 26th 2022. If I click on the little "A" beside news and updates, it reloads an up to date page. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
That's good. The updating you experienced was just a cache renewal within your own web browser.

Since your location is SW Quebec, maybe your local "node" still hasn't been updated?

Earlier yesterday evening, I left my concerns with an "afterhours" contact person at my hosting service. By early this morning, the problem was remedied. Whether by actual intervention or by automatic process, the glitch appears to have been corrected. The internet appears to have become a much more complex entity than in its early days .. weirder and weirder!

I'd like some forum-user feedback as to the website's function. This evening, I noticed the website was serving-up an old version of itself. I flushed the web browser's cache and even used multiple browsers and two other PC's to verify the effect was locally widespread.
Please tell me which version of the front page you are receiving .. the 2021 or 2023 version as shown below. It seems "server nodes" are an industry standard these days and they can be cranky in properly "synchronizing" with the main server. I have verified that the main server is synchronized with my hard drive. But it looks like the host's local "node" may not be!
I'd like to know how widespread the "node" problem is. Your help's appreciated.
Trip Planning » MNR - AFA Annual Work Schedule Maps » 3/21/2023 9:00 am |
I believe this MNR 'portal' is new this year. I anticipate that within a few weeks we should get the annual "seasonally colour-coded" single page map that came out of the AFA CSA advisory group back in 2007.
Trip Planning » MNR - AFA Annual Work Schedule Maps » 3/16/2023 11:01 am |
I just received notification that the AFA's Annual Work Schedule is now published on the Natural Resources Information Portal (NRIP).
It can be directly accessed at ..
https://nrip.mnr.gov.on.ca/s/published-submission?language=en_US&recordId=a0z4X00000OlBxLQAV
Following are some illustrative images ...
Once you get into the "portal", You'll find the following interface ...
The index map shows a grid for identifying the individual detailed maps ...
For the purposes of illustration, below is a close-up of the index map showing the Tim Lake area in Ops-D1.
You'll notice there's a large harvest area plotted both north and south of Tim Lake.
When accessing a detailed map, it is important to access "Operations D1 00.pdf" as it represents ALL the scheduled work .. whereas "Operations D1 01.pdf" refers only to the work CARRIED OVER from the previous year!
Following are the two respective detailed maps .. ALL the work .. and the CARRIED OVER work ...
As in past years, a seasonally colour-coded work schedule map is anticipated to be released in either late April or early May!
Ethics » Get On Board With Leave No Trace Canada » 3/07/2023 3:42 pm |
How can you make your mark and Leave No Trace at the same time?
- By becoming a board or committee member with Leave No Trace Canada! LNT is looking for volunteers who are committed to seeing our Canadian wild lands preserved in the best possible way by reducing the impact of the many visitors now enjoying our parks and open spaces from coast to coast to coast.
Leave No Trace is the internationally recognized set of ethical, science-based, environmental guidelines now promoted in more than 50 countries. Leave No Trace Canada has lots of new initiatives under way - some of which include national and regional partners (more than 80 currently). To keep our Canadian chapter vibrant and relative we need the help of folks who share our values and mission.
Of particular interest are individuals with backgrounds in business, fund-raising, education, communications and management. LNT Canada is a bi-lingual organization, so a proficiency in both official languages is most welcome! For now, LNTC governance is c/o a working board, so a time commitment is necessary. The board meets four times a year with committee meetings held as necessary.
Are you interested?
Please reach out to info@leavenotrace.ca , with an expression of interest and a few details about yourself. You'll be contacted directly.

Over the passing year since last February, most peoples' physical challenges have likely got worse. I know mine have. Finding my own challenges increasing tends to increase my empathy for others in the same boat. The last thing I want to be known as is a "cranky old fart". I'm reminded of Steve Smith's sage saying "We're all in this together."
