Lenny had something similar happen a couple of years ago on the same lake.
Out after dinner for an evening paddle floating/paddleing down the lake trolling 2 lines. It was stupid hot and the bass were just not biting.
Something hit the 1 line and started dragging me across the lake. Fought it for about 20 minutes and finally got it to the boat to realize my "trophy" was a 15 to 18" catfish.
All sorts of fun.

FYI on future fishing trips in Algonquin Park and most of Ontario, one person trolling two lines or more is illegal!  I know when fishing the Great Lakes you can troll with 2 lines, but there are exceptions.

Hmm 2 people out for an evening paddle, 2 lines in the water. We did not see a problem.

For an anchor, pick up a basketball net tie the bottom closed and thread a rope through the top[. Fill net full of rocks and just lower. when you are done or reach the next portage dump the rocks and carry on.

For what it's worth I have been sleeping in the car waiting for permit offices to open for many years and never had a problem with Wardens or being charged for the night.

Like mentioned, try AO in Brent. Pretty sure the town is not technically part of APP and therefore the rules are not applicable. Be careful though the shoreline is part of the Park and not sure what the setback is.

Would not let me edit the above post.
With a water taxi both Bug Trout and or hogan are a days travel and you could rent from the outfitters at the put in.

If you are traveling up Hwy 11 rent a canoe from either Algonquin Outfitters in downtown Hooterville of straight from Swift on the highway.

How was the gathering on Sec this year?
Hopefully someone in the group took lots of pictures as I am looking forward to seeing them.
Would have stopped in but the old ticker is not what it used to be. It has to be around 20 years since we swapped stories around a campfire and even longer since we shared a train ride in The Park. Fond memories for an old timer to look back on.

Opeongo Ourfitters water taxi to Happy Isle portage and either stay on Happy Isle or continue to Merchant.
Ya it is a 2200M port to Happy Isle but it is easy peasy and you are still fresh not having to paddle yet. The port to Merchant is nothing and gets you that little bit further.

Thanks for the warning but I am arriving late. I figure if I somehow make it early enough to get a spot on the lake itself I can just make the switch at the permit office

You are aware that you still need to pick up your permit fir the jump off sites at the Office in town before they close.
If you are arriving at the Office after 7 PM you can crash in the car in the parking lot for the night.  If not you are camped without a permit and a drive back into town in the morning for your permits.
Not the best system but the only one there is.

Not sure if you booked the jump off site because you are arriving late but they are an area in the middle of the parking lot. You might want to change that to an interior site.
I believe the office closes at 7pm so you would still have enough daylight to make it to somewhere decent to spend the night.
Oh the permit office is in Town about 30ish minute derive from the lake.

There was talk around the shop a few years ago that some made it into Opeongo the year the dam gave way but the "Official " word from the Park is no pike in Opeongo.
I beleove there were phone calls made to a few groups camped in the Eadt Arm that year asking if they had caught any.

the site with the chimney is the Southern site on the island in the North Bay of the Lake.
Do not think I would be building a fire in it, the last time I was by a couple of years ago it was showing the passage of time and looked like people had been taking bricks as souvenirs.
Had a conversation with Ralph Bice many years ago about this site and for the life of me can not fully remember, but pretty sure he mentioned that this may be all that is left of the family cottage on the Lake.
It is one of the more popular sites on the Lake and shows the wear.
The site on the North side of the island does not look like much from the water but is a big open site with not much shade.

An overnight interior permit covers 1 person. A day pass covers a car load and judging by the groups hauling in the motorboats to Opeongo at 5 in the morning, don't think the 7am part is that heavily enforced.

I know there is a machine at the East Gate that is accessible when the office is closed.  Pretty sure there is one at the West gate as well.
Pay and display.

Stuff. The tent and fly go in the sack then stuffed into the pack. The poles and pegs get packed separately in the same pack, normally stuck in the back corner of the pack. For me it jus tv seems easier to pack this way

Of course, you can always camp in the "bug free" zones all across Algonquin Park.

Can I ask how one might find these zones?

Just ask someone who works for The Ministry of Tourism 😀
