Hey all, a bunch of us gals are going into Redrock. One of my friends would like to use cart wheels on the portage, if possible. I was there a couple of years ago, but other than the hills, I cannot remember if wheels are at all feasible. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

There is an access point at East Beach, Lake of Two Rivers. I think is it Access 41.

Several things seem contradictory, and some downright punitive to me:

1. Hunting and fishing is open. Crown land is still closed.

2. As an internal medicine specialist dealing with COVID19 directly, and with other medical conditions I can absolutely confirm that people are not seeking care promptly. The data from other countries indicates that COVID19-related deaths account for only 50% of the excess mortality during the epidemic.

3. Backcountry camping is an extremely low-risk activity to the general population.

4. My friend just got an $880 ticket for throwing a ball to his son in the local public park. His son. Middle of a field. Nobody around. He's just finished a week of COVID19 inpatient service.

We can all agree safety is paramount. However, the virus is not going away. The original rationale was not to eradicate the virus, this will be impossible short of a very effective vaccine. The original premise was to "flatten the curve" - in order to have sufficient resources (not just hospital/ICU beds, but also PPE and testing kits).

The only justifiable reason I can see to continue the current lockdown is because there is an unpublicized and severe shortage of PPE or COVID19 testing kits.

I see no justifiable reason to continue to allow hunting and fishing, while backcountry camping continues to be prohibited.

Marko

All your points are spot on. Couldn't agree more and I feel your frustration. Thanks for posting.

Hi Randy! I really enjoyed your trip report. You are a very good story-teller!! I have been up to Gem twice and both times skunked. It is a difficult portage with the steep hill, downed trees and logs. But it has a nice rock face. I wonder just who has had good luck on Gem. Anyway, fun to read. Thanks...

I'm requesting that forum users actively support the province's effort to curb the spread of the virus.

I also ask that we fact-check our "news" before posting it! For example, a resort that is in Whitney is not in Algonquin Park. The angst-level around the pandemic is high enough without cranking it up with mis-information. Thanks.

I thought I'd better chime in here. As of this afternoon, due to the virus the Couples Resort in Whitney decided to close its doors until May.

We have a yearly pass... we could go in walk the trails and never encounter a soul. They could also sell day permits on line. I understand they don't want the front line workers dealing with tourists from all over, but I do wonder if there wasn't some way to mitigate the risks and leave the hiking trails, bird watching and photography opportunities open.

Amazing story and gorgeous photos, thanks for posting it. I've been on all parts of your route, but never as part of a single trip.
Heart Attack Hill is a portage I would happily never revisit... but time has a way of making us forget ;).

It was so awesome watching your videos. I loved seeing what the areas I visited last year but with higher water.

Can't believe that lily pond on your way to Red Pine Bay was even navigable.

Thanks for having a look at my report. You are right about the portaging... the great memories overshadow the difficulties. Snowstorm here right now... paddling seems a long way off!

WOW.....if Norm can do heart attack hill, I guess I can do the portage from Rock to Pen which is my plan for this May.  A trip of a lifetime that will live long in your memory banks!   Algonquin Park wins again for an awesome trip!  After heart attack hill, the only time I was there I fell in love with Little Osler, Osler and Nadine.  Such pristine lakes in the middle of nowhere and which Little Osler is on the top of Mount Everest? lol  All in all, a great read, my past trip to this area flooding back in my memory, and some gorgeous, scenic photos as well.  Well done!

LOL... I am sure you will be just fine Rock to Pen! I think we are hiking the Highlands Trail for Ice Out. Thanks for commenting Bo. I know you have been to all these lakes one time or another. Great Memories.

What an incredible trip!  Congratulations.  My wife said "you are not going on any portage called 'Heart Attack Hill'."  I think she meant it.  Also, That thunderbox on Skuce - that thing should come with a seatbelt.

Glad you enjoyed it Dave! The Thunderbox was unreal. There was a piece of old birch tree wedged under it to "level" it over the hold. I always felt like the box and me were going to go for a tumble backwards.

Heart Attack Hill is not for the faint of heart but I have disliked others more or maybe disliked them differently... like the long one between McKaskill and Dove.

Hey Tess! What a trip. What a trip report. And most of all, what photos!

Congratulations to Norm. He and I are the same age. I'm definitely jealous of his stamina. Hoping his shoulder mends-up OK.

I've featured the report on the website'd front page and will definitely be adding it to the inventory.

Hi Barry! I am really happy you like the report. Thank you for sharing it and adding it to your trip log bank. That is growing to be such an impressive collection.

Norm's shoulder is still a mess, but I think he is mending while waiting for surgery.  Even though the trip was difficult we both have only fond memories and no regrets.

hi tess ,, great stuff,, i read your report on your website not too long ago.  yes, the menu for the trip sounds fantastic,, i have been meaning to ask if you could outfit  me with some of your freeze dried gourmet dishes?
what is on your trip to do list this year? cheers

You should have a look at the trip report. It is not the same thing as what is on the site. There is a part you might be interested in.  Have a look at Burntroot.

Where are you going this year? Do you have a food dehydrator?

Our plans are not as complicated as last year. We are hoping to do a trip to Cedar and down too Catfish.
