2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

Hey Guys,

I was just wondering if anyone had a copy of the 2008 Algonquin Park Fishing Survey. I used to have a copy but lost it when my old computer bit the dust. There is something mysterious about this survey, as it was up originally, taken down, then put up again for a short time (when I got my copy), then again taken down and has not been seen since. Anyway, if anyone has a copy and doesn't mind sharing it, please PM me and I will send my email address. I would be most appreciative!

Thanks,

Moonman.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I will check my ALGONQUIN PARK files and see if I have one.

Do you know what the big issue was in this survey?

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I didn't even know there was a publicly released 2008 survey? The survey results that used to be posted on the fishing page of the FOAP website were 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Now only the 2012 one is linked there but the 2009 through 2012 ones are still online and you can find them by googling. If there are tables from 2008 floating around I too would be interested...

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I would also be interested. From the sounds of it they released it but realized there was some sort of error/issue with it so they took it down?
My girlfriend actually complied a database containing 2009,2010,2011,and 2012.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I have a pdf from 2009

Summary of the 2009 Algonquin Park Trout Fishing Survey

We would like to thank all of those participants who were kind enough to take the time and to make the effort to provide us with what continues to be the best data collected from the trout sport fisheries of Algonquin Provincial Park. While the survey has been designed specifically for trout anglers who camp in the Park interior, every bit of information on trout fishing is useful and appreciated.

Since 2009 was our inaugural attempt to have Park-wide coverage, there were some glitches and missed opportunities, but the results are still enlightening and hopefully educational for all.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

HI Barbara, there was definitely a survey in 2008, not withstanding your post above. There was much discussion on it on this site, a link to it from Barry, as well as a link to a thread discussing from you!

But your post illustrates the mystery surrounding it. If they had the survey out in 2008 (I definitely had a copy), why say 2009 was the first year?

Anyway, here is a link to a discussion of it on this site. There are several others, including one of the original discussions on whether or not the survey should be published, revealing fishing success in various lakes etc etc.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I think the distinction between 2008 and 2009 is that they identified 2009 as the inaugural attempt to have a PARKWIDE survey done.  Whereas 2008 had a survey completed, it was likely just initiated from one or a handful of access points (i.e. Opeongo and Cedar).

So a survey was completed in 2008 but it was just a partial survey and not as far-reaching throughout the park and all of its access sites.

My gosh those posts were made a long time ago.  Hard to believe it's been nearly 10 years since those were made.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

Hi PP, yes you are correct as you can see that stated throughout the threads but I do recall there were still quite a few lakes listed. Still not sure why its unavailable though, even if it is more limited than subsequent years.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

It seems obvious that there was quite an uproar from the fishing public who gave a damn when they posted the 2008 survey results online, and I'm betting that's why the pdf was removed from the public.  Maybe some conservation groups howled as well.

I really, seriously do not remember posting in those threads from 2008.

Surveys were being completed prior to 2008, obviously, but perhaps AP wasn't into the internet thing until 2008.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

Hi Barbara,

I hope I didn't sound accusatory in my previous post - certainly not my intention at all! Anyway, I'm sure the park has a reason for not posting it anymore, although seems like the same justification could be used for the other years too.

Anyway, cheers,

Moonman.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

well  I was able to find 2006 ( very few lakes ) and 2007 which had a lot of lakes but for some reason I can't find 2008.    will keep searching through my files.     I have conflicting thoughts on the surveys,  it was great to be able to pass along the info from fishing to get man hours fished per lake etc. etc. but know from our personal experience that the 1 particular year a great # of fish where caught on a certain lake according to the survey and it was an abnormal amount from other years ( we talked to those fisherman personally about their success,  they where catching and releasing 30+ fish a day  ) and we had our own success using their method and that the following year as we are coming out from our trip we meet up with 2 older gentlemen sitting on the side of the trail pooped from carrying what looked like 80 lb packs and all they wanted to know was how far it was to Lake  X  and if they would get there that day, as they couldn't wait to get there to catch fish.  Lake was about a 45 minute paddle and 1 short portage away and this was at 10 am in the morning,  They obviously had read the survey and thought they where hitting the Mother Load and that was all they where concerned with.

Re: 2008 Algonquin Fish Survey?

I think that's the main issue right there Kenny.  I remember filling out these surveys back in 08/09 only for large, accessible, well-known lakes, I realized pretty quickly that giving out catch information on small lakes would effectively ruin any kind of fishing there in the future.  I would probably be more forthcoming if I knew the information provided wasn't going to be made accessible to the general public and used instead for research purposes.
