Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Trillium, that's an excellent guess.  I cannot imagine that it would be correct since it is such a commonly visited location that someone would've noticed it outright, but often times Peek forces us to look so remotely that he's conditioned us to not looking at the obvious.  It's like a Pavlovian reaction.

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Thanks for the reassurance, PaPaddler.
Guess #2 -- equally too obvious given Peek's opening line to this thread suggesting many would not have visited the place: Sunfish Lake, orientation uncertain as it's been like 35 years or more since I went that way.

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Trilly - not Sunfish but the section between Sunfish Lake and the Petewawa River does kind of look like this, minus the hills.

Tripper - not that creek - or any creek.

Go north of ALL guesses so far.

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Fassett Creek was one of the guesses, there's not much farther North than that.

So, having never been there: looking North from the 1075m portage from Kiosk to Lauder?

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Tripper just stole my next guess. But I'll be more specific and say North River Lake looking north to the mouth of the river itself.

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Not Gouinlock or Windermere

Tripper - close, too vague, it's a big river.

Uppa - oh but there IS farther north not 'map north' - true north. (remember Algonquin isn't as north-south oriented as the map makes it appear) Not Kiosk to Lauder.

Trilly - also close, but not North River Lake looking at the river.

It's a few portages away from an access point. That's gotta do it!

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Last guess: North River south of North Depot Lake, between the 770m and 390m portages, and south of the 1915m portage to Blackbass.

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Trillium you've got it bang on. North River, between P770 and P390 - roughly 300m south of P1915 to Black Bass.

You're up!

AndyW - I'm surprised you missed this - I took this photo about 20 minutes after meeting you and your bro on P770 last July. When I saw you had guessed I thought for sure you had it!

Re: Where in Algonquin? No.114

Cool! Yeah, the clues all seemed to line up and I recalled from one trip down that way in 2011 that it had some of this type of country south of North Depot. But truthfully Peek, I wouldn't have gotten it if you hadn't reminded us that true north does not orient vertically with Park maps. Will see what I can come up with . . .
