Forest Fire Danger rating now "Extreme" - with no rain in sight

Campfires & Fire Hazard Rating System
Forest Fire Hazard:EXTREME
Updated:Thursday, July 5, 2018
============================================
I'm heading into the park in about a week's time, and I'm starting to worry that we've got a fire ban approaching. The hazard was upgraded to 'extreme' as of today. Anyone have any insight about how long it takes a rating of 'extreme' to turn into a complete fire ban? The forecast is nothing but sunshine and hot temperatures.

For those who don't know about this resource, here is a link to Forest Fire Info Map (Ontario).

It displays active, out and new fires across the province. If you click each individual fire icon, it will provide additional information (start date, size, caused by, status).

It also displays the current fire risk rating across the province.

From what a Ranger told us a few years ago, it takes a lot for the fireban to extend to the Algonquin interior, she said there could be a fireban in the surrounding counties, but Algonquin would be fine.

When we were driving back from North Depot Lake today there was a fire across the Ottawa River somewhere in Quebec, (Between Brent turnoff and Deep River)

Helpful link - thanks Peek. Looks like there's a fire on Bates Island on Opeongo. No cause listed, so I'm going to go with 'careless campers'.

For up to date forest fire info, you can check the Ontario Forest Fire Map:

I cook mainly over the campfire so camping with no fire sucks ... but I do have a pocket rocket stove in case.

Odd question ... does a fire ban extend to using charcoal ?

Anything that doesn't have an 'off switch' is included. So twig stoves, charcoal, etc are included in a fire ban, yes.

So I don't know how reliable the source is, but someone just stated on Facebook that they spoke with the park and were told a fire ban for interior sites is going into effect as of midnight tonight.

Re: Forest Fire Danger rating now "Extreme" - with no rain in sight

I found it:

https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/algonquin/backcountry/alerts

Note that when you go to the Algonquin home page: https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/algonquin you then have to go to the Alerts tab: https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/algonquin/alerts which by default will be set to "Algonquin Campgrounds" in a drop down box right under the header picture. You have to click on the drop down box and switch to "Backcountry" and then go back to to the Alerts tab to see the fire ban notice: https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/algonquin/backcountry/alerts

The text of the alert is:

________________________________
Effective - Midnight July 10th, 2018
Please be advised that a TOTAL FIRE BAN is in effect for all of Algonquin Provincial Park.
During a fire ban:

  •     Campfires are not permitted at any time;
  •     Charcoal or wood burning barbeques may not be used;
  •     Portable gas/propane/naphtha stoves or barbecues that have a fuel source with a control valve may still be used;
  •     Backcountry users must have a portable stove with a fuel shut-off valve.  Biolite or other wood/charcoal burning stoves are not                permitted.

The fire ban will remain in place until further notice and will be lifted as soon as conditions allow.  _________________________________________
