Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Right when you turn onto the Achray road only a few houses down on the left there is a house selling wood out front. I'm not sure if they still sell it this late in the season, but I would think they would have something for you. They have a little stand setup at the end of their driveway saying "Wood For Sale $5" I believe. It looks decent too.

Hi Steve,

Yes, you can walk to both of the sites on Number One Lake. I've camped there twice when arriving after the Sand Lake permit office was closed. It's not well-marked but you can see the portage sign from the road, and there is room to park a vehicle or two.

I'll add that the site closest to the parking area is the nicest as far as I can remember. The portage is quite easy and short (slight incline I think, but its not much and makes the site itself feel more private).
The only thing is they will probably be hauling logs on the Achray Rd. steady. Every fall I've ever been in that area this has been the case, and for whatever reason I find the drivers are crazier out that way as well, so be careful!

When will you be going?

I was on Number one a couple weeks back and I agree with ATVenture; the portage site is the better of the two. The hill behind the site does a good job of making the road feel further away than it is

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Awesome info!  How loud is the road noise from Number One?  I'm assuming there's a lot of logging so did you find you heard the trucks a lot and was it loud?

And thanks for the tip for the wood ATVenture!

I didn't hear any road noise, but we were only there a couple of hours. Site number 2 (so, not the portage site) is even further from the road and would be even quieter. We ate lunch on that one, didn't love it, but its serviceable

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Hey Steve,
I'm guessing you would have more privacy at Number One lake than at Sec (though of course both would have very little traffic in November!).  Sec is a nicer lake with more to do + explore.  Downside is that there is crown land very nearby, so there may be hunters + you might hear gunshots, as I did just this last weekend.  On plus side, heard a pack of wolves, which was pretty cool.

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Ummm.... Number One lake appears to have some fall logging activity nearby and hauling on two roads... took a quick look at the AFA operations map. In addition to everything else, there is also artillery practice at CFB Petawawa at times, as well as helicopter noise. Ralph Bice & campsites at access three, by contrast look quiet (but not on the east side in pine and cliff country).

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Thanks for all the input here guys.  Looks like lots of logging in that whole area of the east side.  I think what we're gonna do is head up early and scope out all the sites on Sec, Mallard and Number One (and perhaps Pretty Lake as well as per Johns recommendation) and set up at the one we like the best.  For the most part they are all fairly close to one another so I think that's the best option.  Going for 6 days so there's lots of time and we want to make sure we get the best site for our needs as we can

Just out of curiosity, roughly how many logging trucks would one expect this time of year?  Are we talking one every 5 minutes kind of thing?

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Sounds like ya have a good plan Steve .
I chuckle at such comments as  " the drivers are crazier out that way "
That's part of  Algonquin Park history...... of drivin those roads for years .
My thought on that is real simple , they're hard working lads tryin ta make a living .
I'm on holidays and stay outa their way .
My father who worked on those roads fer years , gave me some sound advice as a young lad ...... when ya hit the hills and the corners .... slow down and stay far ta yer right .

I wouldn't be too concerned there Steve , the logging trucks are sporadic .
In the last several years in fall and winter , when on the Achray or Basin Rd , I bring a portable CB .
There are km markers which they use to let each other know well in advance where they are ,and if they're loaded .
Unlike most campsites along the highway 60 corridor .... up that way , once the sun goes down , ya'll have Algonquin at it's best .... wolves a howlin , and every sound in the bush ta be heard !

Re: Sec/Mallard/Pretty Lake - Easy Fall Trip with Dad?

Love it John!  Looking at the logging map it appears that a lot of that area is designated for winter logging so perhaps it won't be that bad.  The other option was Mew Lake so it can't be any worse than having Hwy 60 run right beside!
