Headlamp Options

I'm hoping to pick up a new headlamp before camping season begins, and was wondering what you guys use and recommend. My previous headlamp was a Petzl Zipka (http://www.mec.ca/product/5043-695/petzl-zipka-headlamp/?q=petzl%2Bzipka), I only had it for one trip before I unfortunately sent it through the laundry machine. After going through the wash it is impossible to turn off and shines all the time.

I am hoping to get something with a little more brightness this time around and have been considering the ThruNite TH10 (https://www.amazon.ca/ThruNite%C2%AE-Lumen-Single-Headlamp-Neutral/dp/B00X7CW12I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459712538&sr=8-1&keywords=thrunite+headlamp). Is this a good option?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Re: Headlamp Options

I bought a Petzl Tikka RXP and have been very happy with it. Its reactive lighting mode (adjusts brightness to conditions) works very well.

Re: Headlamp Options

I too have the Tikka RXP and quite like it.  The battery life isn't great but you can adjust the settings in a computer program which will help increase burn time.  I picked up a portable power bank to take with me on extended trips in case i need to recharge it.  It is very bright and the reactive lighting works good most of the time (not so good around a campfire though).

Not sure if you have seen this. Independent review of 28 headlamps.

Personally I use the 5th one on the list.

Good all round headlamp. No complaints with it.

We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it.

Re: Headlamp Options

This headlamp is amazing. I've got no complaints. It's definitely a knock off of a Blackdiamond version, just a lot less $$$

I believe it comes in at about 120-130 lumens at highest output. Some really nice features with the backup USB charger. I carry a battery bank for non-essential gadgets.

Re: Headlamp Options

I like the tikka for the rechargeable battery pack.  My other light is a zebralight with lithium-ion battery.  Huge batter life on low andcan light up a football field on high.

Re: Headlamp Options

For me, the BD Storm has no competitors as far as brightness, battery life, and most importantly on a canoe trip, waterproofness.

Re: Headlamp Options

I have the Princeton Tec Fred headlamp. It's usually on sale for $20 at Sail and it has everything I want - including 2 brightness levels and a red light. The red light is great as it's not as disruptive to your natural night vision.

It's not fancy, it's cheap and it has held up well (I am not gentle on my gear). My husband, brother-in-law and parents-in-laws all have one.

Re: Headlamp Options

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. I was just browsing the MEC website and noticed that the Black Diamond Storm was on sale for $43 so I ordered one of those.

Re: Headlamp Options

I have this same model.  It is absolutely the best headlamp I've owned (of the 4 I've tried).
Great sale on it!  Run, don't walk to get it!
