Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

I'm not sure if its spring fed or not, but Hambone always amazes me with its clarity and blue-ish water.
Another would be Cache/Tanamakoon.

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

You might be interested in my page http://www.mcelroy.ca/notes/headwater.html (Green Headwater Lakes).

I hesitated in replying immediately because you seemed to be interested in blue limestone lakes and so I wanted to see how the thread developed as to what you meant.  There are essentially no limestone based lakes in Algonquin.  In general, the water is very hard with little limestone content.  That is why the lakes are so susceptible to acid rain.  Only Gilmour and Tecumseh Lakes have any appreciable limestone content and that is due their sitting in a meteorite crater that was formed prior to the removal of the limestone overlayer by the last glaciation.  See http://www.mcelroy.ca/bushlog/20100428.html (Return to the Brent Crater) and associated references for more information on the Brent Crater and its limestone.

(sorry for the lecture.)

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

RGCMCE, thank you very much for the informative read. That's exactly what i was looking for.  I'm just trying to catalogue the known clear, or greenish clear, lakes in the Park.

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

Close to Luckless is Plumb Lake. Beautiful clear blue water with fish-tank clarity completely untainted.

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

Thanks EGB and John.  Ive added  Plumb and Foy to the list.

EGB, funny you mention those Grabbers lures. I'm also an EGB convert.  Not too many people know about these lures. My favorite for APP is the #88.

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

I just realized that i created this thread in the wrong Trip Planning section (Hiking).  Most of these lakes cannot be hiked to.  Can this be moved to Back Country Trip Planning section?

EDIT: Thank you Administrator for moving this to the proper sub section.

Re: Clear Spring Fed Lakes

Along the highway 60 corridor both Westward and Guskewau are headwater lakes that are very clear. One of my favourite day trips in the summer is to hike uphill to Guskewau and then go snorkeling in its crystal clear water.
