Rain, Sawyer, Hot 4 Days

Four Day August trip covering Rain, Sawyer and Hot Lake. The weather was great with some sunny days and very cool nights which was great for sleeping. A decent breeze kept most bugs at bay during the day, although at night it seems the bugs were hovering around the camp fire more so than daytime activities. We did a fair amount of fishing catching 3 bass in Rain Lake and 14 bass in Hot Lake. On the first day we went through to Sawyer Lake by skipping the portage and taking the small creek at the end of Rain Lake. This was not an easy task as the creek has many twists and turns and narrows to just a few feet wide in some sections. The water was deep enough to maneuver the canoes but several over hanging bushes and branches impeded the path. Once through the narrow sections the creek opens up, but is very shallow, and then just before entering Sawyer Lake there is a tree over the creek which you have to duck under. With some good paddling skills we made it to Sawyer.

The second day was spent on Rain Lake with the morning full of thick fog all over the lake. In the afternoon we heard some loud adventures in the area near where one of the small lakes drains into rain at the north end. The small lake (not sure what the name is but on Jeff's map it has an elevation of 441) was draining rapidly as it looked like these guys had removed a huge log that was acting as a dam. Within a few hours the lake drained over 3 inches when we compared the water marks on the rocks and the soggy shoreline now exposed. The next morning on day three we went back to investigate and notice the lake drained over 18 inches....what a shame that these guys interfered with nature. Just a bunch of yahoo's not concerned about the environment.

Later on day 3 we portaged to hot lake to have some fun catching bass. The portage was very steep at the start from Rain Lake but is relatively flat the rest of the way. There is one area that is a washout of soggy mud and you have to make a half circle route around it through the forest to get by. Another section is also very wet and soggy but there are small rocks you can walk over to make it across. The put-in at hot lake was also a bit wet but easy to launch your canoes. The fishing on Hot Lake was amazing and fun. We landed 14 bass and kept two for dinner. It was a blast catching all those bass.

Diner was hamburgers, dogs, pasta day one, chicken and rice day two, pizza and bass day three.

Day 4 was early breakfast, then packing, and on the lake around 2pm.....the access point was very busy when we arrived back. I was surprised at the number of vehicles park at the access point. Obviously a very busy entry point to Algonquin.

Next year we are looking at Daisy Lake.

Re: Rain, Sawyer, Hot 4 Days

Good report thanks for sharing.
Nice job fishing.  I hear the bass fishing is real good in hot lake.  I am going to Sawyer in a couple weeks.  Might have to take a little day trip there for an afternoon of fishing.
